I have to sit the fence on this one.

I get what you mean.

But I also get a fringe guy earning more in 54 holes than they did in the last year or two.
Yeah, know what you mean also. A good mate of mine is actually the caddy for a young Aussie Blake Windred who's been playing in it due to coming 2nd on the Australian tour order of merit last summer and that money will be life changing. 120k if you finish last isn't it?

Good on your mate. Make sure he buys the next round after he buys your steak dinner.

Morally it's a conundrum. For a fella with generational wealth like Mickelson the whole thing is just gross. For that fringe guy it's life changing with the potential of being generational wealth.

I mean I would happily be the butt of worldwide jokes by shooting around 90 for a couple of days for $120k.

….early e/w small stake darts at Pieters 125-1 and Matsuyama 50-1 (8 places 365).

i have never backed McIlroy and can’t understand the fascination with him in majors. If he was of interest I’d wait until he had his usual gaff and back him ‘in play‘ at more realistic odds.

I go on holiday this Sunday, it will be good to have an interest on the last day so look forward to advice from @TangerineToffee.

Reasonable bets given the odds, if we're talking about the Old Course. St. Andrews in most weather goes to whoever crushes the ball and happened to have their putter show up this week, with Zach Johnson being the exception that proves the rule. I don't think Pieters has his putter show up, but you're getting paid for that if it does.

On paper the most likely winner is Thomas, but he has never dealt with the winds in Scotland well. St. Andrews is always a hard one to predict. The winner is overwhelmingly likely to be viewed in retrospect as a monster of the game who also hits it long...but it isn't necessarily obvious at the time. Someone that hits the cover off the ball like Hovland could easily putt like a demon and then rack up a couple of majors later to make it look obvious in retrospect.

Wonder if we’ll see anyone beat the lowest ever round at The Open - 62 by Branden Grace at Birkdale. St Andrew’s with no/or very little wind to protect it might be vulnerable, some (relatively) short par 4s for the big hitters to have a pop at!
Have been roaming around for a price on this. Or more specifically someone to break the Old Course record. I did see it somewhere but it's now unavailable. They might have taken some big punts on it. St Andrews record is 61 and that will be in danger at some stage in the contest. Particularly the first few days lay outs and with the docile weather being forecasted.

It's a classic course, unique in every way and a treasure. It was laid out and well tricked up for the way the game used to be played. The new equipment and balls are like lasers and in the right hands deadly as dynamite. Not what old Tom Morris had in mind all those years ago.

Bet365 free £5 bet on Open. It would appear you can use it on any of the four days on any market. Might keep it for some kind of get out of jail free card in the final round on someone well off the pace lol

Have had an earlier e/w bet on old friend Collin Morikawa at the boosted price of 40/1 with 365. Seems a bit big that, as he is the defending champion and one of the world's best players. And been top 5 in Masters and US Open just recently. And won Open last year on a links course. Looked a bit off in the 150th celebration event the other day. Not at his absolute best at times this season but 40s is worth a go for sure.

Also Paddy Harrington can be expected to show fired up and ready even at 50 years old. Playing superbly recently. Could pay in some speciality markets. Like top European at 66. First round leader at 100/1+. Even outright first 11 at 125s.

Danny Willet seems absolutely unbothered most weeks but seems to pull out a bit extra in big events. Likes St Andrews, might be a goer as top English at 16/1.

Like the powerhouse youngster Joohyung Kim at 15/2 to be top Asian. Also top debutant at 12/1. Been on him several times in Asian wins and that 3rd at Scottish shows he's in the mood and playing well.

Is this the major where everyone finally understands that the equipment needs to be nerfed? The winning score will surely be around 20 under par.

Done my bets for tomorrow. All each way top-8 finish. The usual two of Morikawa and Zalatoris, both at 30s. Gone back in on Sungjae Im after his disappointing last major but at 80/1 couldn’t resist.

Just done last couple of bets now. Sam Burns 50/1 and threw a couple of quid on Tommy Fleetwood to lead after the first round at 50s as well.

….my son got the free £5 but they are less generous with me. Added Morikawa to my portfolio.

Ooh maybe more than that. Faldo got close to that 30 odd years ago. Tiger in 2000 as well.
If there is no rain, players will be driving a lot of these greens, for giggles. Even the 400+ yard holes.
Could be carnage. Unless the wind really gets up, I wouldn't be surprised if we see mid 20s

Rahm or spieth. Leaning towards spieth. St Andrews suits his leftfield/analytical approach. If he can keep the ball away from danger on the fairways, his wedge play, scrambling and lag putting are second to none.

Keep your eyes on Satith Theegala (150/1) and JT Poston (165/1) for outside bets here.

Both been playing well, and Poston won a few weeks back.
