The miss on 3 was the big one. Had a chance to get on a roll early but missed a really short one. And that set the tone.True.. but I didn't even fancy that any of his putts would sink.I mean, he hit the greens, but it's not like his approach play was leaving him with gilt edged chances. The fact that he hit all the greens but only sunk two birdies is very much indicative of safety-first mentality.
Yeah, Rory and Hovland were rolling them in from distance all day yesterday. Smith couldn't make a putt to save his life.52% of Mcilroys shots today were with the putter....
A mixture of conservative iron play, poor putting and bad luck. He tried to gauge what he needed to do from Hovland but he didn't turn up. Then Smith blitzed him on the back 9 and he couldn't find the next gear.Just read that since stats have been available, no front runner who has hit every green in regulation in their final round (as mcilroy did today) has gone on to lose. An unwanted first if ever there was one for rory.
Just read somewhere that 10 out of the last 11 Open winners at St. Andrews also had a top 3 at Augusta. Quite a statGreat round. Bonkers how much of a front runners course At Andrews is. Since 1939 nobody's won from more than 3 back after day 1. Therefore statistically the only players who could win after day 1 were Cameron Young, Rory and Cam Smith!
