Seems to be an American tactic to hit the tee shop into the galleries to get a trampled down lie
It's because they play wide open tracks without actual rough every week. I played Kingsmill once back when it was in the Tour rotation, and it was nice to not be punished for pushing it right off the tee every other hole for once.

I'm short off the tee and it has plenty of trouble otherwise, so it still destroyed me.

It's fun to watch. It's a Vince McMahon made-for-TV sporting event, except that the competition is real and the participants care about more than dollar signs.

So, pick your side and take your chances. It's not an ad for the EU, and never was. The present format predates the EU.

The Hovland marriage proposal in the stands is an absolute riot.

Would give this ten likes if I could. Two thousand years of history says drawing the battle lines that way works so well.
It's unauthentic to me.

A hotch potch of different nations but with a bias toward GB players versus a group of yank mercenaries.

Nation states v nation states; clubs v clubs.
You do realize how arbitrary the boundaries are in Africa, right?

Fair play to complain that this is a made-for-TV event in the sense that the set of participants was chosen for competitive balance reasons. I infer that you also loathe American sports in general because they put a thumb on the scale for inferior teams in the offseason.

Yes, boundaries are arbitrary but they at least attempt to contain discernible differences and a unitary culture - imprecisely but thereabouts. So when they face each other there's usually something tangibly 'other' about the opposition.

My point there was that the process you describe did not happen in Africa.

Do we need the opposition to be 'other' for the competition to be pure? We might need the chess match to be US-USSR for it to get media attention, but does it follow that chess needed Fischer to disrupt Soviet dominance for purity? I'm not buying. That argument seems very media driven to me.
