If something is going to potentially shortener your longevity as a lifter, then the question is should you do them at all?

I'd argue there are things you can do that pose a lower, if no risk at all, to your longevity in lifting and sports.

But surely then everything is a risk with overuse, albeit slightly less because they won't cover such a large area as your back. I do abs once a week and never get back pain. I think I'm relatively safe.

Think of your disc like a tyre on a car, only you can't replace it once it's worn. It's something you really want to place as little wear on as possible.

I'm seeing the physio tomorrow, I'll find out what the name of one of the movements I'm doing is. It's similar to the Bicycle, but removes the compression part of the exercise. It will also have the benefit of working more deeper stabilising muscles more fully too. I've no idea what it's called though, so I'm unable to Google it to point you to a description or a Youtube vid of it.
