2 weeks today and I'm off to Austria. The Stelvio awaits.

He's not told anyone that he's only doing the downhill bit lol

I'm trying to get rid of my disproportionate gut at the moment. It's a lot harder to do so once you get past 30. My weight's not too bad for my height (77kg, 185cm), just can't seem to shift it no matter what I do.

i'm 35. i have really started to watch what i eat. Cut down on boozing now too and replaced with excercise. If i go out to eat when i would have had all day brunch i now have chicken salad or something. Started swimming once a week - enjoyed it so much i am now doing it 3 times a week and playing football 2/3 times a week. I cycle into work every day as well - 6mile round trip. Think the key is to introduce new stuff gradually instead of going all in. feel great since i started eating right.

fair play mate, i do a lot of swimming too. Enjoy it usually. Gonna cut the gym out and stick to that I reckon. I eat reasonably well too but maybe fit in a junk eating session once or twice a week. Need to sort that out. Don't drink too much either. Usually not more than 4/5 pints when I'm out of a weekend.

yeah i am slim anyway but had a head injury last year and knocked me back a bit. Was drinking a lot and woudl then sit at home eating takeaways as i couldnt be bothered to cook/eat healthy. Ends up making it worse.Stopped excercising because i felt rubbish and couldnt be bothered. then decided i had to do something. feel great these days,.

What are good quality carbs to eat instead of bread? Brown rice and wholemeal pasta?

Green vegetables are the best source of good carbs. Even if you're on a carb-restrictive plan you can't overeat on green veggies.
I'm a big fan of chickpeas/hummus also - it's very low GI.
Quinoa also makes semi-regular appearances on my plate these days.

So you would rule out the likes of brown rice and wholegrain pasta and other whole grains? Does just green veg etc give you enough energy to exercise etc?

Personally, yes I would. I try to avoid anything sugar or grain based except in very small amounts... but I am very insulin sensitive, and others might not need such drastic measures. I would actually argue that for many people carbs actually sap your energy throughout the day because they shut off your body's primary source of energy (fat oxidation).

I've posted links from Peter Attia's blog before but I'll do it again, as I feel it really is the very best blog on low-carb & sports science that I have ever read:

Well worth reading parts 1-4.

or this video lecture he gave that covers pretty much the same stuff (and a few extra bits too). It's completely brilliant - the stuff where he gives you his breakdown on his metabolic chamber results is cutting edge sports science:

sweet potato is great for carbs - steam them.
spuds. steamed or baked. (I tend not to eat much - make me feel bloated)
butternut squash
parsnips
carrots
My dinner plate would now have two thirds mixed veg, one third protein.

I cook most veg with the steamer or stir fry.

I eat literally no bread from one week to another when I can.
For between meal snacks, I've substituted in oatcakes (for bread) and a nice topping like hummus, cream cheese, homemade jam, paté depending on my taste buds. Eat a few unsalted nuts and a bit of fruit with that and you've a nice combo of carbs, protein, fats.
