Weighed in yesterday morning at 78.2kg, this morning at 76.9kg. Is that normal to fluctuate like that or are my scales dodgy?

You've either had a poo, drank less water or lost fluids through sweating or peeing, or you have less glycogen in your muscles. It's very normal

I'm not even sure if you're serious here.....

Yeah, going to try vodka with club soda and a slice of lemon, I normally drink it with lemonade.

Vodka lime and soda is actually quite decent. Also you don't get that horrible stomach ache from too much sugary drinks.

Just started going to a new gym. The most intimidating gym I've ever been to by far. Great equipment though.

In preparation my marathon in 8 weeks I've been reading "The Big Book of Endurance Training & Racing" (Maffetone).

I think most people are aware of the concept of building your "base fitness" but simultaneously very few actually understand what it is and why it's so important. Maffetone's method is base on low intensity to constantly improve the aerobic system, which underpins everything. Even most endurance athletes have under-developed base which ultimately puts a cap on their maximal performance.

Maffetone is a regular on the fitness podcast circuit so I'm already familiar with 90% of what's in the book, but if you're not familiar with his concepts, then this book could really revolutionize how you approach things.

Been keeping up the time trials here, done 4 of them now, all with about the same time. Smidge disappointed with this tbh, as I did a couple on a geared bike that in principle should be faster than the fixie I originally used, but wasn't. It was a cyclocross bike, though, so quite possibly a poor ride position for this sort of thing.
OTOH, this week's one was the closest I've come to a decent measurement of effort. Crossed the line with absolutely nothing left. I'd been on the ale for a week solid prior to (on holiday), so that might explain the lack of improvement in time, but felt like it was an improvement in knowing how to ride the course.

Which marathon are you doing mate?

Berlin on 28th Sept.
Never been much of a runner, but I must say that I'm really enjoying it at the moment. As with anything I think that if you are showing improvement then you can really get into the nitty gritty of it.

Are you thinking of doing any of the hill time trials that usually mark the end of the season? Signed up to a couple yesterday so have been doing reps of 3-4 min max effort in training. Wimped out today and put some of my kit in the hedge to make things lighter for the reps. Some swine pinched it. Suppose that'll teach me :(

You need to read Maffetone's book, mate - Train aerobically to improve your base and the results will follow!

That's bad luck on the kit! Thieving swine.
I will do our club hillclimb - think it might be the cat and fiddle way, but only to be sociable. I'm pretty heavy, so will be right at the back. Hill rep training sounds like hellish, but no doubt it maketh the man.

I fancy training properly for the TTs next year - think it will involve buying the dreaded turbo...

Turbos are great for steady efforts such as time trials or climbs of 1hr or so as you can really regulate your effort without having to worry about terrain, traffic lights etc. Most of my training for European rides has been done on the turbo. I can recommend cyclingtorrents.nl for all the cycling footage you could ever want.

Hill climb events tend to be completely different kinds of effort as they're more like an extended sprint. Having someone at the top to catch you is probably indicative of the effort involved  They usually have a reasonable crowd though and that can really help get you up the final few hundred metres.

Raced the London Inline Marathon this past Sunday, and came 10th overall... which sounds impressive, until you look at the list of participants which totalled just 20. Still, a race is a race and you gotta be pretty hardcore to do a marathon in the middle of a hurricane.

Pretty pleased with my effort of 1:48 given the conditions. It's been so long since I actually raced a marathon that it was something of a shock to the system.

@Bruce Wayne what group set are you using? I have only really used sram (red on my Tarmac and rival/force on the cyclo-cross)...going to build a tour bike for a trip I am doing and felt like a change maybe to shimano or campy....any recommendations for mid teir ?

I'm using Shimano. My riding partner uses Campag though. No idea how much of a difference it really makes either way. All about the legs, right? :)
