He was a bookbinder with Rockliffe's printers (who still operate in Liverpool), He left and worked as a driver on the trams which had just been introduced in Liverpool. He became an Inspector and if he was there when we got on a tram, we got a free ride. He was 22 years old when the first powered flight was made by the Wright brothers. So, for the first 22 years of his life, there was no such thing as an aeroplane. There have been remarkable developments in a relatively short period of time (developments accelerated, through necessity, by two World Wars).
