They do indeed sir, as a result of outward growth. You age a specimen by it's rings (dendrochronology) growth per calendar year ! An easy way to explain it is , if you swing on a branch when your 8 you can still swing on it when your 88! It doesn't go up anywhere.

As I understand it, the growth point of a tree is at the top of its stem compared to grass for example which is at the base of it's stem. This is why when you mow the lawn it grows back, but if you clipped too much off the top of a tree it can't grow anymore.

Loping or topping will destroy the parent limb but the tree will still grow. New weaker growth will attach to the parent limb.
