Groucho's Fact Hunt

The mouth of the Amazon river is wider than the Thames is long.

The number of bacterial cells in the human body outnumbers human cells 10:1. The number of bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) outnumbers those bacterial cells 10:1.

There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on the earth (think about that next time you're walking along the beach).

If the largest known star in the universe was put in place of the sun, it's diameter would be larger than jupiters orbit.

Venus is the only planet in the solar system that spins 'backwards' on its axis. It also orbits the sun quicker than one full axis rotation, meaning a day on Venus is longer than its year.

During a collaborative recording session in the '80's (the products of which will soon see the light of day), Freddie Mercury found Michael Jackson to be extremely weird, and ended the sessions when Jackson asked him to sing in the studio with a Llama and other animals.

Over 99% of the solar systems mass is found in the sun.

If you were to be exposed to outer space with no space suit, you could probably survive for about 30 seconds but it wouldn't be pleasant:

- Your bodily fluids would boil due to the lack of air pressure, causing your skin and internal organs to expand but not explode because your skin is nice and stretchy
- You would be exposed to huge doses of various radiation which would probably result in the formation of some pretty major tumours and sunburn
- You would experience temperatures somewhere within the range of -100 to 120 degrees Celsius, depending on sun exposure but because there is next to no air in space, heat transfer would happen pretty slowly
- If you held your breath, your lungs would probably explode, again due to lack of air pressure. This same mechanism would also cause your bowels and stomach to empty themselves pretty rapidly...

I love space me.

Vitoria got bullets in the post for that....

And Nazis, Nazis everywhere.....

Stockport County is the closest football ground to the River Mersey.

......one of my favourite grounds is Edgeley Park, managed to score a few there back in the day.

A couple from me - Howard Kendal was in the same school footy team as pop legend Brian Ferry of Roxy Music fame.

Despite playing a zillion games over a zillion years for Man Utd, speedy winger Ryan Giggs only earned 5 penalties in his entire playing career (think that was the number quoted in SAF book, but it was a ridiculously low number).

To be fair, Giggs was only the oppo's penalty area about 7 times in a gazillion games, so thats a pretty good strike rate.

George Best never played in an FA Cup final.

George Best never played in an FA Cup final.

....just thought of another with a loose connection to Man Utd.

In 1963 the same forward scored against the same goalkeeper in 3 consecutive games at Wembley. Dennis Law scored against Gordon Banks in the Man Utd v Leicester FA Cup Final, the England v Scotland Home International and for the Rest of the World v England.

Not a lot of people know that.
