I work in the medical field and we do continuing education sessions each week, this week was with a Speech and Language Therapist
She confirmed that to swallow (food, tablets etc) you must close your mouth and that it will happen as a reflex
You can of course go through a swallowing type motion with an open mouth but you'd choke if there was any food etc involved
Dont try that at home !
I also work in the medical field, and have just swallowed a mouthful of garlic bread pizza with an open mouth.

Scientifically, I repeated this several times.
Whole slice now gone, all with open cake hole.
Less successful with tea, but once you get the hang of it....
