Groucho's Fact Hunt

The Aral sea, nearby the Caspian, has now basically gone - source rivers diverted by Russia since the 1960s.

@chrismpw. Based on this map, I recently drove from Kings Lynn, over to Napier in the North Island, down through Saltzburg and Brussels to Winterville N Maine. Back up through Finland on to Cornwall and home. 3,850kms
Had to top up the 7.2 L of oil though. Put half a litre of oil in after 2,500kms.
Also had a minor electical fault...it is landrover after all. Finally took the fuse out. Sorted the horn problem.

Australia is massive........and whilst this isn't a proven fact...it is quite thought-provoking.

Banjawarn Station is essentially a huge cattle ranch in Western Australia, on the edge of the Victoria Desert, about 500 Miles North East of Perth. When I say huge, it's about 1 MILLION acres in size.

It was purchased in the 1990s by the Japanese religious cult, Aum Shinriko, who later became famous for setting off Sarin gas in the Tokyo subway. It's widely believed that the Sarin gas was synthesized at Banjawarn, certainly, lots of chemicals were imported as well as purchased from within Australia in the months leading up to the attack.

In 1993 an "unusual seismic reading" was picked up by geological sensors, emanating from just South of Bajawarn Station. The event sent shockwaves 100's of miles outwards. Lorry drivers report a fireball in the sky in the far distance and a long lasting, low frequency rumble. Speculation was of a meteor strike, but no crater was ever found. Another theory was possibly a mine explosion, unfortunately the messurement was 170 times more powerful than the most powerful mine explosion on record.

The most plausible explanation is Aum Shinkoro developed and detonated the world's first non-governmental nuclear bomb.

Australia, it's pretty big. Big enough to get away with detonating a nuclear bomb.

And it's also why this is such a cracking sledging:

James Ormond v Mark Waugh – Ashes 2001 – Fifth test, The Oval
Despite Waugh undoubtedly having a greater mark on cricketing history, Ormond well and truly came out on top of this war. Upon arrival, Waugh said to Ormond: “Look who it is. Mate, what are you doing here? There’s no way you’re good enough to play for England.” Ormond replied: “Maybe not, but at least I’m the best player in my family.” Australia trounced England 4-1 on their own patch, but this minute battle was won by an Englishman

Mark Waugh - brilliant enough to make the team in a supermassive country, not even best player in family

Wouldn't there be some severe fallout/radiation that could be measured after the event? Unless they dug a massive shaft into the earth, of the kind the North Koreans are keen on...
