Within Germany, there are sixteen Bundesländer, which are the individual states that make up the Federal Republic (Bundesrepublik).

It's typically more united than the American system, but they do have proud heritage and each state has responsibility for legislation, judiciary etc.

Yes, ish. The unification formed the German Empire (Deutsches Kaisereich), which contained the Northern German Federation.

It was already on the cards due to von Bismarck, who I definitely recommend reading about, but it wasn't a federation in the purest of terms but that's another story.

Where did you get this information from Kurt because from what I've read that's a gross overestimation.

Best explanation I heard about this is, is geological. There are vast natural methane deposits trapped in undersea caverns below the sea bed. Every so often a cavern and sea bed collapses releasing a bubble of high pressure methane. As the bubble rises and diffuses it lowers the bulk density if the water and so reduces the uplift it can provide. Once the bulk density of the water is less than a vessel, the vessel will sink like a stone - with no warning and little time to release a mayday.

Continuing up through the atmospheric column above any aircraft flying through the methane rich air will suffer oxygen starvation which means the engines will lose power or stall with an over-rich mixture.

Of course the most likely explantation in the magazine media is that its ghosts or aliens.

Diolch. I was reading something about it months ago you see and it gave a very different impression, so I'd be interesting in watching it.
