Groucho's Fact Hunt

The plumb part refers simply to the plumb line used since antiquity for straight lines, loco being, I assume, an Americanism added to imply someone's being a div.

Agatha Christie uses plumb as a prefix for a few terms (plumb smart or something) to imply "straight", as we'd say "dead" clever or something.

Loco is Spanish for crazy

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1903.

Work commenced in 1905, with 95% of the Sandstone being supplied by Woolton Quarry, Liverpool 25.
The interior 5% of the sandstone being supplied by quarries in Rainhill and Runcorn. Intially the stone was transported from Woolton on carts pulled by six horses, then steam engines, which were eventaully replaced by lorries. The last stone taken from the quarry for the Catherdral was in 1979, when the quarry was shut. It's now a posh housing estate !.

Icelandic language has barely changed since the middle ages, most folks fluent in the language would be able to read script dating back 800 years
I read somewhere that a Medieval English person could hold a conversation with a modern German. Us modern English speakers would struggle to understand the early English.

The Common Swift - other than for nesting spends its whole life on the wing. This include sleeping, when it flys to high altitudes and glides downwards whilst asleep. It's presumed that it wakes again as it enters the warmer air at low altitude.

It catches insects on the wing and drinks by skimming water with its beak open over ponds and rivers.

It migrates from Africa to the UK / Europe in April and returns in August after breeding. It can cover up to 200,000 miles a year reaching speeds of up to 70mph.

Before migration was known about it was thought that Swifts spent the Winter hibernating in the mud at the bottom of ponds.

The Bee Hummingbird is the worlds smallest bird. As the name suggests it is no bigger than a Bee, reaching a max size of 6cm and weighs no more than 2g. It's eggs are roughly the size of a small pea.
