Groucho's Fact Hunt

I heard this ages ago, and I must admit I doubt it is true, but it might be.

It is said that rivers in the UK derive their name from the local native tongue from eons ago calling them "The River", but the word for "River" was their word for them. So when we say the "River Avon", we are actually saying "River River". "Avon" being their word for "River".

But I think there are too many rivers for it to be true of every river.

16 signatories of the original declaration of independence in America were of welsh descent. The largest ethnic group of signatories on the original document.
America is supposedly named after Richard ap Meryk, a Welsh merchant, and sponsor of Cabot's expedition to Newfoundland. It is commonly assumed to be named after Amerigo Vespucci, but the names of countries/territories are usually surnames.

There are a number of theories as to the origin of the phrase 'Mind your p's and q's'. My favourites is to do with being mindful of how much alcohol one was consuming in taverns a long time back. Pints and quarts being p's and q's.

Also having read through this thread it's a fact that Groucho would be a good man to have on a pub quiz team.
It comes from the printing industry, in printing presses the tiles you print from are in reverse so the "p" or "q" were quite easily used by mistake.

You are spot on - it's true for a lot of UK rivers but not all.

On the subject of rivers, the Mersey is as sacred to Hindu's as the Ganges is.
