The circumstances leading to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in hostile Sarajevo in 1914, the spark for the First World War, are truly bizarre. Earlier in the day, one of his Austrian military officer bodyguards was shot and injured by Serbian nationalists and so went to hospital. At the end of his meet and greet duties for the day, AFF wanted to visit the hospital where the officer was. In doing so, his driver, not knowing the route took a wrong turn and end up in a narrow street. While trying slowly to reverse and turn round, another armed Serbian nationalist was sat in a coffee shop and saw the royal car virtually at a standstill. He walked out of the coffee shop and shot AFF dead. On such moments, the whole future of the world turned.
