Groucho's Fact Hunt

Tigers at london Zoo used to be kept in a round cage with railings for wall. Tigers scent mark their territory, peeing sideways.

That's why the keep them behind glass or on the other side of a pond these days.

Paul woke up one morning in his top floor bedroom at the Asher's home in Wimpole Street with the tune for 'Yesterday' in his head. There was a piano by the bed and he went straight to it and started playing. "It was just all there," he said. "A complete thing, I couldn't beleive it."

Although at that point it had no lyric, Paul was worried that the tune itself might have been unconsciously plagiarized, and that what had seemed like a flash of inspiration may only have been a surge of recollection. "For about a month, I went round to people in the music business and asked them wether they had ever heard it before," he said. "Eventually it became like handling something into the police. I thought that if no-one claimed it after a few weeks then I would have it."

He then came up with the provisional title 'Scrambled Eggs' and began singing 'Scrambled eggs, Oh you've got such lovely legs', simply to get a feel for the vocal.

In Iceland, a woman took part in a search party for a missing person, only to discover that she herself was the person reported as missing.

Haha love this one :) :)

On a side note, anyone who is interested in random facts should take a look at the books 'A short history of nearly everything' and 'At Home' by Bill Bryson. Both jammed full of random facts! :D

"If a potato can produce vitamin C, why can't we? Within the animal kingdom only humans and guinea pigs are unable to synthesize vitamin C in their own bodies. Why us and guinea pigs? No point asking. Nobody knows"

Bill Bryson is the man.

Yes, yes he is. Love Bryson's books, the two above are great, especially the former. Absolutely amazing book, so much infomation in it, but reads more like a good novel. I'm just reading 'One Summer' at the moment, some great facts in there also. The only one I can vaguely recall is that 1835 (or something like that) is the only year the US has been debt free.

Believe he's an Evertonian as well

If that's true then I love him even more! :)

Groucho, you are a bad man. I'll have to start reading this thread from page 1. This is going to take up valuable time.

I've spent the last 3/4 days doing exactly that! Worth it tho :)

Additionally, "Blame It On The Boogie" was written by a man called Michael Jackson, but he wasn't related at all to the Jackson's. He recorded his own version, it's decent.

Sure I read this a day, and a few pages, ago! Was definitely checking his version out yesterday. There's been a fair few repeated facts, unsurprisingly, several times only pages apart!!

The sentence "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter in the english language.

Ah, now I see why it's so used for displaying typography.

the state of Alaska holds the most Northern,Eastern, and western point in the United States.

How can that be true? Don't understand how it can have the most Easterly?

Great thread though. Will have to find some cool facts to contribute ;)

There 's a film coming out soon based on Brysons 'A Walk In The Woods'
A good read, but certainly not his best. May give it a go as, bizarrely, Robert Redford is playing Bryson! lol

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt1178665/

Does look badly crap though.

The average human loses 26 calories when kissing for a minute. Furthermore, vigorous sex for half an hour burns 150 calories (you can lose three pounds in a year – if you have sex 7 to 8 times a month). Kissing is also very good for your teeth: the extra saliva released during the act helps to keep the mouth clean – reducing the risk of decay.

Bloody hell, on the 'vigorous sex for half an hour burns 150 calories' that means after one of my vigorous sex sessions I have burnt 600 calories!!!

The pubic wig (merkin) has been around since the 1400s when it was originally worn by women who had shaved their pubic hair off to prevent lice. In the Victorian times it was frequently worn by prostitutes who wanted to conceal the fact that they had diseases like syphilis. They are also used in the film industry to conceal actors genitals in nude scenes.
