Groucho's Fact Hunt

Harold Godwinson (Harold II) whose army was defeated by William the conqueror in 1066 was the last English/UK monarch to be descended from an English family, apparently. Every monarch since has descended from a foreign family, according to a documentary I recently watched. I'm taking their word for it, as I can't be arsed investigating all of their family trees.
I think Harold's mother (Earl Godwin's wife) was Danish.

Norman, Welsh, Scottish, Dutch, German...it is possible and I doubt they would say it if it wasn't true. Many were born in England but not from an English family as such. But how many generations down the line does someone become English?

During WW1 the German navy converted the cruise ship RMS Cap Trafalgar into an auxiliary cruiser. They then disguised it to look like HMS Carpathia, also a cruise ship which was converted to a British convoy escort and raider.

Fitting seasonal one here : Father Christmas potted history .

The red and white colours of his clothing are derived from the red and white traditional bishops robes worn by St Nicholas, who was the Bishop of Myra in the fourth century and was legendary for his kindness to poor children.

In 1863 - 1836 Harper's weekly ran images of Father Christmas, creating the concept of elves working a workshop for him too. However the images they used portrayed him as skinny and elf like.

Then Coca Cola got involved and from the early 1930's created the current version of Father Christmas co of the Swedish artist - Haddon Sundblom, to advertise Coke. Fur trimming and a belt was added as part of the outfit. These ads ran for thirty years and have helped shape the image globally of Father Christmas to this day.

The first mention of reindeer is in a story published in the USA in 1821 called A New Year's Present :

Old Santeclause with much delight
His reindeer drive this frosty night
O'er chimney tops and tracks of snow
To bring his yearly gifts to you
