Quarter finalists.

They just don't have the talent. This is Germany, a country with more great players than they can even remember to celebrate. People like Günter Netzer, Bernd Schuster, Pierre Littbarski, Thomas Haßler, Matthias Sammer, and Michael Ballack are barely remembered here. I suppose that's what happens when you are merely great and get overshadowed by the likes of Seeler, Gerd Müller, Beckenbauer, Rummenigge, and Matthäus.

Ok, I exaggerate a little, but this current squad is deeply ordinary. That defence is woeful, the manager will probably pick the wrong goalkeeper (who is basically finished), and when you are still finding room for Thomas Müller you know the next generation hasn't come through.

Don't get me started on Leroy Sane.

Germany's only hope is the team is lifted by home advantage, gets a good start, and people like Florian Wirtz and Musiala are inspired. Otherwise, they fall to the first good side they meet.

Germany. The new England.

I hope you’re right Drico but I have a feeling they might put a little run together

Well, ask yourself what is a "run"? In this tournament, Germany are certain to make the last 16. Three teams will come out of four groups. This is probably one of those. Beat Scotland, draw with Hungary and Switzerland and they'll likely play someone like Croatia or Italy in the last 16. They won't fancy either of those. Historically, they are among the very few countries that tend to do well against Germany. If they do win that match, is that a run? I'd say it is and it'll likely be as far as they get. Semi finalists at a stretch, but barring Wirtz or Musiala becoming the absolute stars of the tournament, that defence will let them down.

In their favour, however, is the reality that this is the first tournament since, probably, 2010 where they aren't going to be complacent. But having grown up on absolute powerhouse German sides, this one is as weak as they've been since, ooh, 2000-2004. And you'd probably need to go back to the pre-war days prior to that to find as ordinary a German squad.

The tournament has been expanded meaning there are more teams who won’t be doing much besides filling the schedule until the competition begins in earnest.

Scotland have as much right to be there as anyone, I just don’t see them doing very well.
We finished second in our group behind Spain. I don't think our magnificent qualification had anything to do with expanding tournaments.

It's like 1998 all over again - great at the back and midfield... Gordon Durie up front.
Aye, I was saying we are just a couple of good central defenders and a striker short of really taking us to that next level, which would be average. But, there are some players coming through, we have a young squad with some real quality for the future, like Hickey and Ferguson. Hopefully an Mbappe type will burst into the team soon- a Mcbappe!

Sounds like a McDonald’s breakfast.

Hate to say it because he’s RS, but that doak is meant to be pretty decent.

Hopefully someone like Conway takes his opportunity and makes the step up… but we have too many injuries to our good players for this tournament I feel

So I've heard. I've only seen small clips of Doak but he certainly brings something else to the team. Electric pace and always looking to run at defenders with the ball at his feet. I was hoping he was going to be a wee surprise for this tournament. The injury list is a bad one. Like you say, it would be good if someone really stepped up and did the business, but I just don't think we have the depth of quality across the park.
I was hoping to see Ferguson get a proper run in the team. We have a pretty good midfield as it stands, but he was given the Bulgarelli award a couple of weeks ago. That's given to the person voted the best midfielder in Serie A. Previous winners are guys like Pirlo and Pogba. Real shame about the injury.
