Its certainly a possibility. England have tended to follow a similar pattern regardless of manager in losing to the first big nation they come up against in a tournament KO match. Probably under Sven the big one was failing to win the group in 2002. A win instead of a draw against beatable Sweden or Nigeria sides would've won England the group, then they'd have come up against Brazil in the SF and not the QF.

That’s like in 2018 when we finished second in the group and ended up going on the play… oh, Colombia and Sweden rather than Brazil.

Probably true. But those teams are still weaker than pretty much everyone on the other side of the draw so it’s still unbelievable luck and allows Southgate the opportunity to further airbrush his record.
