All the nonsense talked by English pundits and Southagate and his players about wanting to win. Very noble. They'll be hammering it in their own net to avoid Brazil in the quarters, the hypocrites.

Turnip DaveK. That's your new name.

Sorry mate but I find that extremely offensive. Many other people in this thread have said “we”. The fact you are even discussing this with me is utter pathetic to be honest.
Wow. The real angry English fan is coming out now.

So it isn't speculation any longer, now we know, Brazil look very good going forward if not so good at the back and enter the half of the draw from hell!!

Currently: 2nd in England's Group get to beat (almost certainly) Japan, then meet the winners of Sweden and Switzerland before facing (almost certainly) Spain or Croatia in the semis.

The two halves

(Uruguay, Portugal), (Argentina, France), (Mexico and Brazil), plus 1st in Engs group vs second in group h in one half (Colombia maybe?)

As opposed to

(Spain, Russia), (Croatia, Denmark), (Sweden and Switzerland) plus 2nd in Engs group vs first in group h (Japan maybe?)

The group h part is unknown, Senegal the other alternative, but the rest isn't

Its nearly as stark as the direst predictions, granted Germany are out but that only gives Brazil an easier passage

The advantages of being in one half of the draw are potentially very very big indeed.

Of course we can lose to anyone anywhere anytime but either England or Belgium will have a very good chance of progression by tomorrow night.

I don't discount the effect and the real gains to confidence and positivity that winning tomorrow would bring and that perhaps being a better way, but just think that half of the draw is so packed with potential winners and top teams that it's likely to be a much greater ask.

We or Belgium couldn't meet Spain until the semis in the other half

Martinez has made it his top priority to avoid that half of the draw...so not only are we paying their second string team, we're playing their second string team who won't be trying

Not sure how much confidence will come from beating a second string Belgium side

- (Gary Neville was saying something similar on itv)

It is delusional to say that one half of the draw

(Fra vs Arg) vs (Uru vs Por) against (Bra vs Mex) vs (bel\Eng vs Sen\Col)

isn't miles harder than

Bel or Eng vs Jpn, then Swizz\Sweden vs Spain/russia or Croatia/Denmark.

there are only 3 possible finalists from that half - Eng or Bel with one of Cro and Sp.

To say that the top half is stacked is something of an understatement imho

Just pick a squad team why go all out when it's such an obvious disadvantage to win?

It would be a dreadful result, a massively hollow victory for the present which most likely would be a precursor to our earlier elimination.

Beating a second string that isn't trying has few benefits beyond today.
