Honestly England, if the Australian side were three quarters as good as you were I would be happy. You have a poor mentality.

Last minute scraped winner against a poor Tunisia and a win against the worst side of the tournament and a large section of this country are bigging up Englands chances and hailing Southgate as the new messiah

Its truely laughable
Think they have a chance of going far purely because no team has looked unbeatable and Harry Kane can carry them. All down to that middle class bore picking a decent team.

I don't think it's worth getting too upset about last night, it was a League Cup game in terms of importance. They should beat Colombia, who made a hard slog out of a poor group from what I've seen. If James R is out, England have to be strong favourites. What's in no doubt now is why Gareth favours the XI he does; Kane, Sterling and Trippier are crucial. Jones was so poor for me.

We and Belgium, France and Denmark now have an attrition advantage. I'm not sure the strength of opposition makes this route better, but logistically Moscow > Samara > Moscow > Moscow is undoubtedly less challenging than Rostov > Kazan > St Petersburg > Moscow.

Imo, Southgate instructed that England team to lose last night. The attempts at goal were utterly laughable. It was obvious the players who got those shots off were putting them wide on purpose.

So, a decision was made by the manager to leave aside a sure fire QF spot by brushing aside Japan in order to secure an "easier" QF opponent and maybe progress to the SFs.

That's his decision. That gamble is with him. Get beat by Colombia and he has made a massive error and deserves to lose the managerial position. You can be sure the English football media will have made those calculations too.

Agree totally with all of this. It was too weird a performance to not have been swayed a bit.

Could and probably will backfire badly.

I think Southgate KNOWS it was his gamble too. Fair enough if they get to the SFs - it's come off for him and he'll take the plaudits. Fail to exploit the easier route though and he's in the dock. That's just the reality of the situation.

May get lucky if Colombia's injuries don't improve but it's a huge risk to take against players like Falcao, Quintero, Cuadrado and James.

Saying that, they were poop yesterday too!

We are lacking a central mid and have fairly obvious frailties at the back, a bit like a Manchester City of a year ago or even Liverpool, more impressive on the front foot but always liable to concede.

Its why I was so anxious to avoid the half of the draw which could really expose us.

As of right now we definitely have a chance of real progression and far.

Its still a massive IF but once you get to a semis in a cup you always have a chance of winning it even if on paper you shouldn't.

We may still lose to Colombia but right now this is our best chance for around 30 years and we had to give ourselves the chance even if we fall at the first hurdle.

Its is as enticing a route forward as we're ever likely to get

This is the most lopsided draw in World Cup history, we're still quite capable of losing to anyone but right now have never had a better chance of going all the way to the semis and once there chances of winning a cup are there and very real, no matter how much stronger on paper the opposition is.

Get through the last 16 and quarters and confidence would be far higher than before last night anyway.

How much momentum and positivity would have been gained by our first team beating Belgium reserves anyway?

We may lose to Colombia but what a chance!

Boiling hot day, big Colombian presence in the stadium, Kane off form = England go out.

If Turnip Southgate passes that test then wins against the "inferior" QF opponent he's thrown last night's match for then he's confounded his critics - me included. However....
