Thinking about it today I'm really disappointed in England. It's pure arrogance to think it will be easier against Columbia and Switzerland than Japan and Brazil.
They had the chance to field a strong 11, beating Belgium and showing they are truly fearless. Imagine if we beat Belgium and swept aside Japan. The attitude going into Brazil would have been huge.
Instead, Columbia will be licking their lips and Switzerland/Sweden will be relieved they won't be playing a favourite to win the tournament.

No one thinks it will be easier apart from the media, most England fans are being realistic and taking things a game at a time, if we go through great, if we go out after playing well then there won't be many complaints

It would be quintessential England to go out to Colombia now. Everyone would be guilty of Englanding this up. Fans, press, manager, players.

If they get through, however, they'll win the QF and it'll have been an undeniably fantastic tournament for them. With a healthy amount of spawn in the semi, they could even make a final.

The Colombia game holds so much potential for another failure and missed opportunity. If England catch them on the wrong day (where they hit Poland levels), getting by them will be a huge ask. Would be huge for England if James misses the game.

Cant understand all this 'wax lyrical' over Belgium. They beat two poor sides- as did a poor England- then they only beat this 'poor England' by a single goal. Belgium have had the easyist of groups. Lets see what they are like when they meet a quality side.
wouldn't be surprised if both Belgium and England get knocked out this round TBH

If James is back for Columbia England should be scared. Seeing as we only have one player who scores goals against decent teams, if they snuff out Kane it should be a pretty straightforward victory for them. No way our defence copes with the movement of Falcao and James, with their two wingers pinning our full backs back too.

Martinez done the same thing though so how is Southgate getting blasted yet Martinez is getting praise when in the run up you were bleating on about Belgium throwing the game.
I never bleat.

How did Martinez throw the game when the Belgians were rotated AND sent out to win (and no one looking at their attempts to score can say otherwise)?

Absolute bollocks lad......as usual ..you were all for Belgium fielding a weakened team ....there are no guarantees in knockout games....ask Germany
Ha Ha Ha. For a second there I thought you said Japan aren't going to be wellied everywhere by Belgium to secure their QF slot

...oh....

Yep. I didn't say it wasn't a chance worth taking, I said it was a gamble...Southgate's gamble. The stakes are either he gets to the Sfs and is lauded or or he doesn't and should lose his job for pulling a stunt off like last night's when he most definitely sent a team out with the instruction to fail.

Yes davek, Southgate has really gone up in my estimation for taking what is still a gamble, even if it's very much a strategically justified one and one he really had to take imo.

Lots of England managers have failed before we know that, a few have reached the quarters or better but only a very select few the semis or better, in fact only Ramsey and Robson.

Southgate despite having a young side, one which is likely to be far better in future tournaments, in two and four years time, has the chance to take this side beyond any realistic pre-tournament expectations.

The side has obvious defensive frailties and lacks an effective central playmaker normally so needed in tournament football, an English one doesn't exist atm and Gareth can't simply magic one up, he's not a club manager and he can't just buy one.

Suddenly, and perhaps quite unexpectedly, a freak of the draw has offered this side, lacking in so many ways, a unique opportunity to reach a stage way beyond its capabilities would normally merit. This is possibly a once in a lifetime and life changing opportunity that could put Southgate's name in the same bracket as Bobby Robson.

He could have tried to take the nice easy safe option and aimed to put a ceiling, an upper limit on England's best possible outcome, one of beating Japan even if probably exposed by Brazil. He could have played more or less his strongest team and tried to beat a second string Belgium (not third they weren't allowed a squad of 50), and gone on to maybe beat Japan, not a certainty either.

He has instead thought strategically, recognised the opportunity such a massively lopsided draw has given him, it's so stark, it's absolutely unique, it's never broken this way before, it's just never ever happened before.

He's risking the gleeful 'told you so's' of all the hindsight merchants, all the press who win both ways and the usual friendly souls who always predict or wish the worst possible catastrophe on any England manager, the chippy and those Scots who support anyone England play. To be such a one isn't a good look.

He had to go for it.

To be fair, Robson in 1990 had a similar break with Cameroon and Belgium, (non vintage) until the semi. That said, that team, well man for man anyrate, was way superior to this one. Hope they progress, but the cold reality of watching England for too many years is that they will struggle to get past Columbia.
