Guardian article from an Evertonian on Moyes & the derby

It's like all the other apologist stuff today - unconvincing.

Still waiting to hear why

a) it wasn't humanly possible to play Liverpool and then Sunderland four days later with the same players

b ) why the Spurs game couldn't have been used to "rest" players and instead the Derby was

Regiime-friendly writers like Wilson can turn the matter upside down, sideways and inside out if they like, but there's no escaping this fact: our manager sacrificed a very winnable match against our arch-enemies.

exactly, i think he panicked and started worrying about the quarter final

I think he calmly sat down and thought it through days, maybe over a week in advance, because it's not like we picked up knocks against Spurs that would have made him reshuffle plans.

So he's prioritised and thought that Spurs at home is winnable with all hands on deck, and that Liverpool is a tougher game (for him it most definitley is) so we'll have a breather and effectively tank that one, and then on Saturday we play all our best team again and hope we picked up no knocks against Liverpool.

That had to be the schedule.

A) its a big ask to ask the same 11 or 12 (including piennar) players to play 4 games in 11 days - Arsenal on Weds, Spurs was a late kick off on Sat & Sunderland is an early kickoff this Sat - leaving very little rest & preperation time between all 4 games

B) I think Moyes may have felt that spurs was the more winnable game being at home, our record at anfield etc - A sending off or 2 is also very common for us in derbies & it takes a lot out of players.. Moyes obvoiusly felt it wasnt worth the risk

The cup game is and should be the priority & as much as standing in anfield & paying £48 to watch our second string be completely outplayed hurt .. all will be forgotton if on saturday afternoon were in the draw for the semi final & im planning a trip to Wembley!

hmm, yes...depressing

the 1st teamers he will bring in will be cahill and nevville tho

"The Carling Cup was a fantastic achievement but it's gone now, it's been put to bed. We have to forget about that," he told the Liverpool Echo.

Gerrard said on Sky Sports 1: "To beat Everton is always special, so to get three goals is a little bit extra...

"It was a great term performance, a clean sheet. Everything we wanted from the game we got it."

All quotes from Gerrard (I'm sorry to have to put that on this forum) but why is it so hard to understand? Yeah, we'd all love some silverware, but outside a final, the Derby is as big as it gets.

i`m not arsed with the`fa cup is a priority` rubbish. it was the next game that counted and this one happened to be the derby. the only games i`m not too bothered with are the mickey mouse cup

The 4th match with Arsenal doesn't come into the equation if we're focusing on the prioritisation of the Sunderland tie. What it boils down to is Everton have been tasked with playing 3 games in a fortnight prior to the cup match, whilst Sunderland have had to play 2 in just under a fortnight. Not a particularly stamina sapping schedule for one compared to the other, to be fair.

This stuff about priority in any case: why should there be a priority between those two fixtures? Is it not poissible to have the mindset that this whole week was the priority rather than just one of its fixtures?

Yeah but i think Moyes will have considered the fact we have the 4 games in a short space of time & the possibility of injuries/suspensions that may occur because of this, it allso looked asif he used last night to give some players game time (Jags, Victor, Rodwell, Coleman) which may prove crucial in the next few games

Im not saying there should be a priority i can just see where Moyes is coming from, weve got very little to play for in the league & most fans would have probably took a win over Sunderland than a win over the sh*te

Not really the game to do that type of experimentation in though is it mate?

They'd all have wanted two 100% performances from their best players though.

It's not getting beat that hurts most (that's always a [Poor language removed] to take against them) what hurts most and is unforgiveable (and will be whatever happens on Saturday) is that the manager weakened us to a point where we had little hope of getting a result...and whatsmore he's unrepentant about it and would do it again no doubt.

Bottom line: any manager of Everton who doesn't know what the score is with Liverpool is going to come in for some much deserved scorn. Moyes knows what he did and what the consequences are. IMO, he has to win that cup now to stand a chance of rehabiltating himself. I've been critical of Moyes over the past few months but not desperate to see him out the door. That's no longer the case now and he cant go quick enough if he cant prove that his judgement was 100% spot on last night by going out and lifting that FA Cup.

A rubicon was crossed when he handed in that team sheet.
