Guardian article from an Evertonian on Moyes & the derby

Not really the game to do that type of experimentation in though is it mate?

They'd all have wanted two 100% performances from their best players though.

It's not getting beat that hurts most (that's always a [Poor language removed] to take against them) what hurts most and is unforgiveable (and will be whatever happens on Saturday) is that the manager weakened us to a point where we had little hope of getting a result...and whatsmore he's unrepentant about it and would do it again no doubt.

Bottom line: any manager of Everton who doesn't know what the score is with Liverpool is going to come in for some much deserved scorn. Moyes knows what he did and what the consequences are. IMO, he has to win that cup now to stand a chance of rehabiltating himself. I've been critical of Moyes over the past few months but not desperate to see him out the door. That's no longer the case now and he cant go quick enough if he cant prove that his judgement was 100% spot on last night by going out and lifting that FA Cup.

A rubicon was crossed when he handed in that team sheet.

I agree the derby's not the game you should be resting players in & last night hurt like [Poor language removed] especially when they were there for the taking, in saying that though a defeat to Sunderland will hurt just as much-if not more cionsidering whats a stake - so if weve given ourselves a better chance against them because we rested players for the derby & avoided an Inevitable suspension then im ok with that.

Moyes should have known how much a defeat there last night would hurt the fans & how let down we will have felt from his team selection & the performance .. however he probably realises that, that result will be forgotton if were planning trips to London come Saturday & the result of the Derby will mean vey little to most fans if we go on to lift the cup in May! ... Wembely may also provide the perfect the setting for the biggest derby win of them all

I've no problem with him prioritising the Cup. But there was no need to weaken the team to that extent. Neville, Cahill, and Heitinga at least should have been playing last night.

I'd even accept him taking a draw, but that was set up for a loss and a bad one at that. You don't throw a derby, ever. And worst of all he wasn't that bothered about it judging by his post-match interview.

I dont agree with him throwing the game & yeah there was no need for the amount of players he rested - we dont no the full story though maybe a few had knocks/weren't fully fit etc.

Moyes will have a lot to answer for should we lose to Sunderland on sat ..Dont forget though we need to beat Sunderland on Sat,even a draw isnt good enough as it will swing the tie in there favour, maybe Moyes couldnt afford to take that risk & if Neville goes on to lift the FA Cup over his head in may then i would have happily took a 10-0 defeat last night - no one will remember this result or the fact we were above them for a few days in March in a couple of years time - everyone will remember lifting the cup

He makes a good point.

Moyes knew we were gonna get bollocked when he put that team out. It took some balls to do that on his 10th anniversary knowing full well he'd get slated.

I really really really really hope his risk pays off.

let me get this right from reading some of the above ....

moyes knew we were gonna lose so showed bottle by putting out a weakened (hardly fit in some cases) team?

and .....

moyes knew we had a better chance of beating spurs (probably the most toughest talented hard to beat exciting teams to watch this season) than beating liverpool (one of the weakest most pathetic liverpool sides ive seen in my lifetime who have struggled plenty this year) , so played his best players in that game instead of the derby ?

and ...
that getting to the fa cup final is more rewarding than beating our rivals at there ground , going above them and maybe finishing in the top 6 or 7 despite one of worst first half of the seasons ever under moyes regime.

imo on all counts ...... im totally and utterly bemused and bewildered

I honestly am wondering if I'm better off out of this football life of mine. I'm obviously from a byegone era and a dinosaur, as I simply fail to understand how fellow Evertonians can even begin to attempt any justification - or even acceptance, however begrudgingly - for that disgrace the other night.

Over my dead body should we be sending out a weakened side against them. The only possible scenario would be a FINAL hot on the heels - not some poxy sodding quarter final. Not even a semi.

It's compounded by the cold, hard truth that Moyes will wilt under pressure once again EVEN IF WE DID make it to the semi and/or final, and send out yet another defensive formation and starting eleven. His stall will be to neutralise the opposition and hope to nick it 1-0.

We'll never win anything under him, never. With Spurs, Chelsea and them likely to be the other 3 in the hat we're even more likely to witness Moyes' uber negativity as described above.

Have Evertonians really stooped to the level of belittling a derby? If so, I give up.

Moyes was a S**t for the team selection...........however the players he put out need to take a long look at themselves, nearly to a man they had no fight about them, they just folded before the whistle. i can see the logic behind straq and anichebe up front, two big strong lads that put themselves right in the defenders faces. however they got no service and when anichebe did get it he was brushed off the ball llike a speck of dust. yeah moyes picked a weakened team but he could of expected them to fight for there places a bit. Players just as guilty as manager imo

Great post mate, fully agreed.

Seeing some people defending what happened is making me really angry.

We have indeed stooped that low.

You can see the logic in playing two big string lads against two other big strong lads at the back for them? I thought that was madness personally. If we had someone to run at them a bit they would have **** themselves.

You are right though that the players deserve a bit of scorn poured on them as well but its hardly surprising that they struggled when a quarter of that team was blatantly unfit due to lack of any games.

what i dont get though, someone mentioned in another thread about this, if he wanted to rest players (ridiculous) why didnt he put some of the young pretenders in there? Barkley Duffy Guaye etc? they at least would have had some run in them

Yeah but i think Moyes will have considered the fact we have the 4 games in a short space of time & the possibility of injuries/suspensions that may occur because of this, it allso looked asif he used last night to give some players game time (Jags, Victor, Rodwell, Coleman) which may prove crucial in the next few games

Im not saying there should be a priority i can just see where Moyes is coming from, weve got very little to play for in the league & most fans would have probably took a win over Sunderland than a win over the sh*te
we get more injuries in training than anywhere else.... er.... and internationals

Post of the week mate. Spot on summary of my feelings too.

As for Sunderland and a win squaring things: no chance. The only thing that will erase this almighty fcuk up and surrender is lifting the cup in May...QF and SF wins isn't justification for his cowardice against that lot.
