Guardian article from an Evertonian on Moyes & the derby

You simply cant think like that though regarding injuries and suspensions. You cant go into every game fearing the worst. If it was the cup final this weekend and there was nothing to play for at all in the league then yeah maybe. But that wasnt the case.

I agree Sunderland is the more important game but lets get one thing straight here, the derby was a massive game too. A chance to go above them, a better chance then ever to finally beat them at their ground and a chance to push on for the top 6. Also the morale boost they will have received from that win compared to how they would be right now if we beat them is massive. Lets not forget they are in the cup too still and one of our main threats. Destabilizing them at the same time was a missed opportunity.

I'm in no way saying we should be going into every game fearing injuries & suspension but you only have to look at Sunderland to see the negative impact that a derby can have on the side before an important cup clash. Yeah the derby was there for the taking & I'm far from happy that we blew the chance because of a terrible team selection - it is also far from certain that we would have got anything out of the game aswell though.

Yeah we could have went above them & yeah they are one of our main threats in the competition but considering 6th place doesn't even guarantee a european place, we've got a tough run in & we could even meet the sh*te at wembley - were I would expect to see one hell of a reaction from us - Tuesday night may eventually prove to be a gamble that pays off.

Not really the game to do that type of experimentation in though is it mate?

They'd all have wanted two 100% performances from their best players though.

It's not getting beat that hurts most (that's always a [Poor language removed] to take against them) what hurts most and is unforgiveable (and will be whatever happens on Saturday) is that the manager weakened us to a point where we had little hope of getting a result...and whatsmore he's unrepentant about it and would do it again no doubt.

Bottom line: any manager of Everton who doesn't know what the score is with Liverpool is going to come in for some much deserved scorn. Moyes knows what he did and what the consequences are. IMO, he has to win that cup now to stand a chance of rehabiltating himself. I've been critical of Moyes over the past few months but not desperate to see him out the door. That's no longer the case now and he cant go quick enough if he cant prove that his judgement was 100% spot on last night by going out and lifting that FA Cup.

A rubicon was crossed when he handed in that team sheet.

i share these feelings exactly, we'll never forget the things he's done for us, hopefully when his time is up he'll be remembered more for this than for his team selection in that derby... but everton fans never forget and i feel he lost a lot of support there. Will be interesting to see what reception he gets against sland if they decide to do a 10 year anniversary special, i'd probs advise against it

I cant see why there would be a reaction really. He barely ever gets us up for games like that.

It will never be a gamble that pays off for me. We could have won both games. Even a draw whatever. We should ahve went for both games, you dont take gambles on derbies. It means so much to the fans.

Of course we may not have won, but we will never know now. To be honest I dont really care if we would have won or not but giving them 3 points like that is inexcusable for me regardless of the situation.

There is so much pressure on this game now that didnt need to be there.

That's the bottom line on this for me. I'll never be able to comprehend anyone who:

a) doesn't think putting 100% in against Liverpool whatever the circumstances (perhaps barring a CL final three days later against the best team in Europe!) is the right thing to do

or

b ) thinks that standing toe to toe with Liverpool and slugging it out isn't better preparation than have players cowering in the dugout or at home and then having huge pressure placed on them to deliver next game up.

It's just a spectacularly ****ing daft way of viewing matters.

I'm guessing there would be a reaction from the players who are hurting? Just as I'd expect to see some sort of reaction on Saturday.

Were going in to our biggest game of the season in good form, with near enough a fully fit squad & without any suspensions - which is the only positive that is left form Tuesday.

I was at anfield & have never felt more let down by the club than I did the other night - in saying that though Moyes obviously has a plan & if we beat Sunderland I will feel far better than any result over that lot would of & if we draw them on sunday afternoon I'll be ecstatic!

A lot of those hurting players wouldnt be playing in the cup if we played Liverpool though would they? Nor would they be playing Sunderland.

Mind you with Moyes who the hell knows....

We wont know if Moyes was right or wrong to do what he did until after the Sunderland game, the whole squad will be looking forward to it - not just those who played against the sh*te.

Moyes obviously prioritises Sunderland & if were lifting the FA Cup in may then Tuesday night will be a distant memory

Fair enough if you think that way.

I would say he was definately wrong. You give you all to every game. Its not something that I and I reckon a whole lot of other fans will forget in a hurry.

Its kind of like (well probably not really but bare with me) your significant other cheating on you. You may forgive and get back together you may have brilliant times in the future but it will always nag in the back of your mind that they cheated.

Moyes cheated on me (kinda) by bending over for the man (Liverpool) I hate the most. I can forgive maybe but I certainly cant forget....

Haha - Moyes just had the bigger picture in mind & to be fair I'd rather be walking down Wembley way next month than have bragging rights for a couple of weeks

Which is it mate, just for purposes of clarity?

And if the rs do the same on the back of a 3.0 Derby win? what does that say?

Jags has come out and said the defeat has put more pressure on the fa cup game....which is nice.
