2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

He's been here a year and people are still saying he doesn't control games. He never has! That's not his game, why do people still not understand?
A lot of fans - quite rightly I suppose - cannot forget the £45M for a player who does the occasional good thing but not much else. He was a big fish in a small pond at Swansea, failed at Spurs yet we splashed the dosh anyway. Might as well keep him as we will not get the money back.

So your response to a blue tinted view, in your opinion, is to talk a load of negative rubbish with no basis?
"He does nothing like 90% of the time."
I mean, that's just no true is it lol

The blue tinted remark is to suggest he's in anywhere near the same bracket as either Salah or Mane. That's the kind of deluded thinking that we laugh at them for, like when they used to say how Joe Allen was the best midfielder in the Prem, etc. I would watch him and wonder what exactly it was he did... Much like I do Sigurdsson, except we paid £45m for the privelage.

Gylfi's best game, showcasing much of his skills, was Soton at home. All of the work was done outside the box. The balls to Richarlison, the tee up to Walcott, the set pieces. He was absolutely brilliant and displayed so much more than "getting shots off and finding space in the box". It's such a lazy observation.

I praised him after the Southampton game.

He managed 28 passes including 6 chance creating passes at 78% accuracy.

In the other games he has only managed 8 (62%), 15 (86%) , 13 passes (76%) and 26 (65%) passes with a combined 4 chance creating passes.

As I said earlier out of 1200 players in all 5 European leagues no regular starter is touching the ball less per 90. Players in his position are averaging about 40 touches a game. Elite ones nearer 60.

I respect you were against his signing, that's your right. But you're seemingly trying to jusitfy your view with baseless information. Look at the video above, earlier in this thread, of his chances created for visual evidence you're wrong.

I've not said he doesn't create ANY chances. Simply that ALL players create chances. The stats I posted earlier showed the quality of chances he was creating weren't anything special.

"With our limited midfielders we need a 10 who drops deeper, keeps the passing ticking over and can progress the ball forward with dribbles"

Don't you see how you're compounding the issue by advocating these tactics? You're saying let's have MORE bodies further away from goal, next to our "limited" midfielders (Morgan and Gana I imagine?) and you believe we'll create more chances? It makes no sense at all, to me anyway.

To me it's simple, the further the oppos sit back, the more important it is to have a CM being able to find Sigurdssen of which we don't have any.

More than happy to agree to disagree though. I love a debate but I just do not see where you're coming from at all.

I agree that a passing midfielder is the most important skill we lack. Said it for the last 18 months.

The ball has to get to our front 3. With Sigs positioning we are effectively playing 4-2-4. I don't think we have a passing midfielder who can play in a two. I think with a passing midfielder (Gomes) in there the most effective team would be 3 pacey attackers and a midfield 3 of Gomes, then 2 of Gana/Schneiderlin/Davies.

No PL midfielder should be averaging <20 passes a game and 65% success. People moan we don't control games or retain the ball high up the pitch but GS is a huge reason behind this. He shoots or attempts a final pass with almost every touch.[/QUOTE]

Too much drama on this thread , in my opinion, like many other ones at the moment , following a few disappointing results.
I rate Siggy , and let's please remember we are still playing with the majority of last years team.
Let the new signings start playing and settle in , and then I think that all will be revealed.
Overpriced , yes, but that's not his fault. Good player , yes , also.
