2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

It’s the only full game he’s played with Richarlison, so it was the only one I could use. Like I said before, I get why people think he’s been poor as he hasn’t been as influential as he was at Swansea. I agree that Walcott hit the ground running when we signed him and I think he’s a great player, but even he was anonymous on Sunday. We signed Sigurdsson to link the midfield to the forwards and create chances, he hasn’t done that as much as we expected but he did link well with Richarlison in that Southampton game.

Again, I’m not defending how he’s played so far, but I don’t think we should write him off as being absolutely terrible just yet. At least wait till Silva has his first 11 available around him and see how he performs, cos he has got a bit of quality about him.

Richarlison has done more in the three games that he`s played, than Siggyfraud has done since he`s been here.

The clock is ticking I`m afraid.

No, too valuable on the pitch. His game isn't going to deteriorate. He's not a Salah/Mane type player fortunately.

This has to be one of the most biased, Blue tinted bits of nonsense I've ever read.

First of all, too valuable on the pitch? He does nothing like 90% of the time.

Second, I only hope his game doesn't deteriorate, because if it did, it would be like playing with 9 men instead of 10.

Third, and I wish I didn't have to say this, but I'd take either of them for 1 season over Sigurdsson for the remainder of his contract.

And I hope to god you are kidding about giving him another contract after this 1. The only positive I can think of with that, is if we do end up giving him 1, he will have actually started doing something by then. More likely is that we will have lost all ambition and just settled for mediocrity. Those are the only possible outcomes where he signs a new contract.

Disagree.

So your response to a blue tinted view, in your opinion, is to talk a load of negative rubbish with no basis?
"He does nothing like 90% of the time."
I mean, that's just no true is it lol

Agree that the main issue we have is progressing the ball up the pitch. We don't have either of the deeper midfielders capable of playing a forward pass and that was my main worry going into this season.

It is also the reason I was dead against signing Sigurdsson. He doesn't help with this issue, he makes it much worse.

His skillset is limited basically to getting shots off and finding space in the box. This is why I say he is more of a Cahill than a normal #10. He is effectively a striker if you look at where he actually plays during build up.

Carragher not understanding Gylfi's role doesn't surprise me. People hear £45m #10 and assume he is a creator who needs to be running the show but if people can't see that isn't what he is 10 years in to his career then I don't know what to say.

With our limited midfielders we need a 10 who drops deeper, keeps the passing ticking over and can progress the ball forward with dribbles. Like me had when we had the same midfielders with Barkley instead of Gylfi.

Gomes will help as he can do that Barkley role but I see him as a replacement for Gylfi in a 4-3-3 in the longer term.

I just completely disagree again.

"His skillset is limited basically to getting shots off and finding space in the box"

I don't want to appear rude at all, especially to you- a very decent poster.

Gylfi's best game, showcasing much of his skills, was Soton at home. All of the work was done outside the box. The balls to Richarlison, the tee up to Walcott, the set pieces. He was absolutely brilliant and displayed so much more than "getting shots off and finding space in the box". It's such a lazy observation.

I respect you were against his signing, that's your right. But you're seemingly trying to jusitfy your view with baseless information. Look at the video above, earlier in this thread, of his chances created for visual evidence you're wrong.

Don't you see how you're compounding the issue by advocating these tactics? You're saying let's have MORE bodies further away from goal, next to our "limited" midfielders (Morgan and Gana I imagine?) and you believe we'll create more chances? It makes no sense at all, to me anyway.

To me it's simple, the further the oppos sit back, the more important it is to have a CM being able to find Sigurdssen of which we don't have any.

More than happy to agree to disagree though. I love a debate but I just do not see where you're coming from at all.

Just meet this man

Boys are having a nice little lunch in Manchester. Baines was too aware.

He needs to be sold, preferably January 1st 2019 but I’ll accept 4th January 2019
