Again, if he’s 25 of 30 for his professional and Iceland career, I’d say he’s decent.

Hazard is 44 of 51.

Baines is 26 of 29.

Of that top 10 penalty takers in PL history, only Le Tissier and Henry were better conversion wise than Baines. So we’ve been frankly spoiled.

He hasn't even been the most successful Everton penalty taker in PL history...

Unsworth?

Always a starter for me, but obviously needs to come off Penalties

Thought Gomes would be a good Penalty taker myself

Do you think Gylfi really has competition, like most of the other positions now do? I wonder if he really feels the pressure of Bernard or Dowell on his back? Now we're in a happy position that a few positions - e.g. CBs, Front 3 (not Richarlison), LB, have competition for places which should in theory be pushing players on. I wonder what it would take to make it like Bernard or Dowell could be a realistic no.10

Basically penalties have a conversion rate of around 75% in general. So people banging on like we should be slotting every single penalty and "Hurr durr dees are profeshunulls dey need to just smash it" are being a touch naive.

So you think they shouldn't practice them? I understand your sentiments, but things are a bit different at the highest level.

I reckon the good ones shouldn't/wouldn't have to.

I think with stuff like penalties there is a risk of over thinking things, weird run ups etc always end up badly.

Best nation for pens, the Germans, finished every session of training with penalty practises. Think you'll find that all the best ones for routinely practise taking them too.

England, renowned bottlers of pen shootouts, until recently never used to practise them.

I think its more of a mentality thing than anything.

Realistically every single top level player should be able to kick a ball wherever he wants it to go with unerring accuracy and I reckon they can. The difference as you say is not bottling it. Most things in football are down to mindset, especially the difference between the successful and less successful sides.

And practise helps to build s confidence mate, it's why at every single sport people do so in a variety of things as a lay person we'd assume they wouldn't need to do.

Basket ball players practise penalty shots for hours on end etc. Kickers in American football practise before a game on the field religiously and so on.
