2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Maybe failed was too harsh a word but I feel when the going gets tough in games he goes missing. A bit of a flat track bully.
I’d say he’s quite the opposite. Don’t recall too many crying he was missing when he lashed that belter in at the Pit last season.

It didn't help us get through though. If you assess his first season and a half there has been far too few important moments. The 2 penalties at crucial times he missed luckily he got himself out of jail against Fulham. If he scored the one against Watford I think we would have went onto win. He is not too blame for the price tag but he certainly isn't living up to it.

Since 2016 he has created an average of 0.67 open play chances a game. No attacking midfielder in the league has fewer.

Barkley averages 1.54

Even Gana has 0.6

However Gylfi has the highest setpiece creation per game at just over 1 chance per game on average.

He is just set balls.
I can tell just by watching the game just how wrong that stat is.

Hes scored 8 goals, hes got the most assists, hes our highest chance creator, on what planet is he failing here?

Using this logic Richarlson is a total failure.

I am with you 100%. Our season would be worse without Gylfi. If other players were performing to this level we would be a lot closer to the Sky 6 right now.
Bernard, Richarlson, and Gomes are not getting this critisism because they are more exciting signings and haven't been tarnished by last season.

Long and short is Gylfi is doing what he is expected to do in the team. Even his transfer fee is not that much of an issue given how the market has moved.

First of all, Leicester had bid over 40M for Sigurdsson, so we didn’t just throw out 40M+ for fun.

Second of all, Ross Barkley stinks. He’s not the player he was when he first came up with us and hasn’t been for like 2 or 3 years now. He’s a huge problem on that Chelsea team, which is why there are so many rumors of them trying to buy midfielders.

That proves that stats mean absolutely nothing as he hasn’t delivered a good set piece since Lyon at home last season.

I get why the Gylfi vs Ross comparisons happen but really they aren't necessary. What's more important is to look at what Gylfi does and ask if it's enough to warrant having him as an automatic first XI player going forward. For me he isn't dynamic enough or creative enough to really warrant consistent starts as an attacking mid. I'd like to see us switch the midfield and try him as a box to box type player alongside Gomes but I fear he won't get involved in moving the ball forward as much as he would need to. Ultimately we shouldn't be penciling him in as a key player beyond this season.

We tried that like 4 matches ago, it was terrible.

Debunked

Sigurdsson's first 37 PL matches for Swansea:

- 2.04 chances per 90 from open play
- 61 out of 97 chances from open play
- 12 out of 13 assists from open play
- Averaging 37 passes per match

This season he averages 1.20 chances per 90 min from open play, only 24 passes per match.

Ross Barkley averages 45 passes per match, 47% more than Sigurdsson. Yet only creates 22% more from open play?

When Sigurdsson averaged 37 passes per match (17.8% less) he created 24.6% more chances despite averaging fewer passes. (0.50 more)

How does this compare to other PL Playmakers?

KDB: 2.13 chances per 90 from open play (2017/18)
- 3083 minutes, 37 matches, 73 open play chances, 72 passes per match.

Eriksen: 1.87 chances per 90 from open play (2017/18)
- 3226 minutes, 37 matches, 67 open play chances, 60 passes per match.

Despite averaging 250-300% more passes per match than him they & still don't outperform him from open play.

Your data is based on his two seasons as a winger at Swansea & for us last season; Proving that you're clutching at straws.
