2019/20 Gylfi Sigurdsson

If what I’m seeing lines up with the objective numbers, I’m probably right. But it’s not about the stats. My guess is you had no idea how Silva set up the team. Probably haven’t seen Villa play. Probably could even understand the tactics in the game if you watched it 100 times. Probably don’t even understand the stats if they were in your face. Probably never read a tactical book. Probably never took a coaching course. It’s about understanding the game and most that don’t would rather sit behind their computers and take cheap shots. Probably would never say what they say on a message board to anyone in person.

Said about Sigurdsson (and I’m a big critic of Sigurdsson), that for what we paid, has been a poor signing.

When we signed him, we signed a set piece “specialist”, yet he’s crossed so many corners into the first defender, thought I was back in the Twilight Zone with Arteta’s corners. Has he scored a free kick for us yet? I can remember about 5-6 in his last Swansea season.

A professional footballer, at any level, if they’re short of pace, needs to be on their toes, to make up a half yard they’re losing. Not Gylfi, he’s consistently caught flat footed, waiting for the ball to come to him.

But yeah, it’s not all bad. When he does actually turn up, he’s actually a really good player. Which is why I’m probably so frustrated with him, I can see he’s got the ability, but instead, he loves to play sideways passes and take 15-20 minutes out of the game to go missing.

I’ve no doubt we’ll get a good return off Gylfi this year, but Christ he makes it hard to be likeable.

I've been one of his biggest defenders throughout but he has had 3 terrible games so far this season.

I think it's clear that the midfield central 3 are playing like strangers most of the time. Understandable to an extent given the loss of Gueye so late in the window but its frankly maddening that we weren't better prepared for it given everyone knew he was going.

But that's only an excuse, great players (like those you expect in Siggys price class) make things happen anyway

He's done that in previous seasons (goals and assists despite the team playing badly) but he has failed to do ANYTHING so far this season, like even the basic requirements of his position. Hes been a ghost and im hoping he and silva are working on this because its time to move on otherwise

You could argue it’s more worrying they’re playing like strangers since Sig, Gomes & Schneiderlin have played together for a year now.
