2019/20 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Said about Sigurdsson (and I’m a big critic of Sigurdsson), that for what we paid, has been a poor signing.

When we signed him, we signed a set piece “specialist”, yet he’s crossed so many corners into the first defender, thought I was back in the Twilight Zone with Arteta’s corners. Has he scored a free kick for us yet? I can remember about 5-6 in his last Swansea season.

A professional footballer, at any level, if they’re short of pace, needs to be on their toes, to make up a half yard they’re losing. Not Gylfi, he’s consistently caught flat footed, waiting for the ball to come to him.

But yeah, it’s not all bad. When he does actually turn up, he’s actually a really good player. Which is why I’m probably so frustrated with him, I can see he’s got the ability, but instead, he loves to play sideways passes and take 15-20 minutes out of the game to go missing.

I’ve no doubt we’ll get a good return off Gylfi this year, but Christ he makes it hard to be likeable.

Technically he is our best player. If he had a bit more pace he'd be unplayable on his day.

His fee relegated Swansea. They accepted an inflated fee knowing they would be lucky to survive. They gambled and lost.

You could argue it’s more worrying they’re playing like strangers since Sig, Gomes & Schneiderlin have played together for a year now.
Mmm though only 2 of the 3 in a system where Gueye would run a lap of the earth every match shutting everything down.

Without Gueyes dependability in that role its a completely different role for them all now

It is but they still train almost every day. It’s not like playing with say Gbamin where you’re not sure what passes he can make yet, what’s he like under pressure playing out etc. They should all be fully aware of what each other can do.

Gana was great at what he did, wasn't he?

Personally my favorite player during his tenure. Wish him the best.

That said he was limited to that which he is great at.

I think we can improve on some of his deficiencies with what we have, but replacing what he is great at isn't on the roster.

Technically, absolutely. I couldn't agree more really. But then, it's when he shows up, and a lot of the time, he doesn't show up, and that's what frustrates me.

No, he hasn’t scored a free kick for us yet

Which is utterly pathetic

weird one siggy, obviously technically superb but when we don't play well he doesn't

gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's had DCL infront of him not making the best runs, see how he does with a propa striker infront of him making runs, because some of his through balls are boss

There was a bit more to Swansea going down than that to be fair. Swapping Llorente for Bony being towards the top of the list.

He is playing badly and at present he isn't the only one.

A spell sitting on the bench can act as a great motivator for a player and I think that is exactly what he is facing unless he turns his form around rapidly.

In the games I have seen including pre season it has been like playing with ten men which is unlike him because even when things were not going well for him in a game he always worked hard for the team.

Maybe , he is playing to new instructions but whatever it is , it isn't working.

Where’s all this ‘technically superb’ stuff coming from? His first touch isn’t even great. Bernard Digne and Gomes are all fat better technicians than him. He’s good at set pieces, at through balls and can hit a decent shot with either foot. Technically superb though? Please. Half the time he has to put all his effort into just retaining the ball because his first touch or complete lack of pace has put him under pressure.

A static player in a game that more and more is about pace and power. Might have been good in a mid table Serie A team in the early 90s. Certainly not good enough for the premier league today.
