People keep making it seem like £45 mil in today's market is a lot of money...especially when you consider that it was essentially a relegation concession....it really isn't.
Which ever way you slice it 45 mil is a ridiculous amount, even in today's world of big transfers

O right aren’t we? Why’s that?

What we competing for then?
Why? Because we haven't had the squad or the manger to do so, it's one thing wanting to be top 4 but another having the team to do it.

Top 6 would be a start, were competing to improve, good players like Siggy will help us do that but he can't do it on his own. Get a few more class acts in like the Icelandic genius and top 4 might be a reality

Why is it? Its not like we didnt have it. We got a ridiculous fee for Lukaku, these prices are all over the place, the fee dosent matter, we even got a crazy fee for Barkley.
People are too quick to remember when we pay too much but forget when we sell higher then what our players are worth

Sigurdsson sufferered with us shoehorning Shrek into every line-up. He will shine in his best position next season.

Rooney played 13 games in attacking midfield, Sigurdsson played 10.

In Rooney's 13 games there he scored 4 goals and got 1 assist
In Sigurdsson's 10 games there he scored 0 goals and got 1 assist

Rooney also played centre midfield (3 goals in 6 games), centre forward (3 goals in 4 games) and all number of other midfield roles.

Funny how the washed up has been managed to do a decent enough job in 4 or 5 different roles but our £45m superstar managed 4 league goals (Huddersfield, Southampton, Swansea, Palace) getting the goals from left midfield.

Well played Sir ;)

If you don’t think that Rooney’s presence on the pitch had a negative impact on Sigurdsson’s contribution to the team, then you don’t know what you’re talking about.

It’s a shame Sigurdsson wasn’t on penalty duty, isn’t it? Could have beefed up them deceiving stats.

Rooney is a signing that should have never happened. We wanted to go in a different direction, but Kenwright took us right back to 2002, signing washed up hasbeens like Gazza and Ginola.

We overpaid for the lad, there's no getting away from that and it's not his fault. It's what happens when a manager becomes intransigent on a particular player, won't look at alternatives, and that player remains the key man for a PL side. Lessons can and should be learnt from this.

He was a lot better once he was fully fit last season and when played in position against Liverpool away and Burnley at home with pace and movement around him produced his best performances. He is a cleverer player than I thought and I hope under an attacking manager with more movement in the side he will do well.

What I always liked about him, which remains true is he works incredibly hard and is a team player. That alone isn't worth 45 million (or 40 down) but when you ally that to his quality on the ball and ability to strike a ball you have a very useful player. Even when he was struggling, he never stopped working hard, never stopped showing for the ball, never hid etc. Many would have done.

This hard work, his physique (which should allow him to play well beyond a lad like say Rooney) mean he still has some years ahead of him. It also means he can blend into systems quite easily, whether it's left, right down the middle or playing deeper as he is clever enough to understand the different roles required of him. That will be a major plus for any manager, and I imagine Silva will see this.

Just like pace and movement around him will help him (and I think he may have scored 4 or 5 and assisted similar in the run in as he was kicking into gear, injury aside) I also think having a side who will hopefully be higher up the pitch will too. It means more possession in the final third, more shots at goal, more free kicks to shoot and assist and more opportunities to put corners in. This will likely increase his worth to the side.

I get the idea of selling him, I'd have never have bought him for 40 million+ but that decision has been made. We now have a proper system in place where a DOF makes decisions as opposed to a coach which should help. However this seems an awful time to sell him, his value will be at the lowest point and we'd lose lots of money on him, on a player who looks to have settled after a tricky 6 months and may be able to kick on next season.

I think he will be one of the first on the team sheet. He's an attacking threat, can score goals from distance and create opportunities from open play and dead balls, but also play in a rigid team structure that can be based on pressing the opposition. He is similar to Cleverly, but a major upgrade on how he was used for Watford. I think he will do well next season.

Except by every objective measure he does. Usually those that don’t like Sigurdsson can only give subject options or misrepresent facts. He’s class.

There are posters today that claim that Sigurdsson created nothing in his match with Argentina!

My question is, when we start playing more attacking soccer, when he gets to take penalties, and scores 8-9 goals next year with the same number of assists, runs his tail off, are the same posters going to trash him just because they think they are clever?

If he does, I'll say he playing well. I just personally feel we need to spend a ton more just to make him look good/better which will mean building a team around him.

IMO that'll be a mistake. We've spent £300mill on mistakes

If you don't see that Rooney's ability to move the ball forwards through midfield was vital to our survival this year you don't know what you are talking about.

I am the person who has posted non-stop about how penalties shouldn't be included in stats as they are so deceiving. I even pointed out that you should consider volumes of set pieces when discussing Gylfi's "expertise". He took every set piece for Swansea, but his chance creation PER set piece wasn't that great.

I think Pickford, Walcott and Coleman for me, Sigurdsson 4th, probably Tosun 5th and then it's a shedload of bad.

It's not that Gylfi is bad, it's just that for the player he is and the role he adopts in the team, I'd prefer him to be more versatile. He's good at what he does - it's just that what he does is limited.

Hes been working for very limited managers.

Anyway, im done in this thread, he honestly couldnt have played any better yesterday and people are still having a pop, im gonna enjoy the vaulting next season, for damn sure.

Survival? Hahahaha. Do you think we would have been playing with 10 men if Rooney hadn’t of been there? The fella was a liability. He couldn’t even make a simple 5 yard pass in the majority of games without losing possession.

You mean the relegation threatened Swansea team he kept up? As soon as he left they went down.

Rooney was wrongly the centre of everything and it didn’t leave much opportunity for Sigurdsson to show us his best form. I’m gobsmacked if you think Rooney is currently the same level as Sigurdsson.
