We overpaid for the lad, there's no getting away from that and it's not his fault. It's what happens when a manager becomes intransigent on a particular player, won't look at alternatives, and that player remains the key man for a PL side. Lessons can and should be learnt from this.
He was a lot better once he was fully fit last season and when played in position against Liverpool away and Burnley at home with pace and movement around him produced his best performances. He is a cleverer player than I thought and I hope under an attacking manager with more movement in the side he will do well.
What I always liked about him, which remains true is he works incredibly hard and is a team player. That alone isn't worth 45 million (or 40 down) but when you ally that to his quality on the ball and ability to strike a ball you have a very useful player. Even when he was struggling, he never stopped working hard, never stopped showing for the ball, never hid etc. Many would have done.
This hard work, his physique (which should allow him to play well beyond a lad like say Rooney) mean he still has some years ahead of him. It also means he can blend into systems quite easily, whether it's left, right down the middle or playing deeper as he is clever enough to understand the different roles required of him. That will be a major plus for any manager, and I imagine Silva will see this.
Just like pace and movement around him will help him (and I think he may have scored 4 or 5 and assisted similar in the run in as he was kicking into gear, injury aside) I also think having a side who will hopefully be higher up the pitch will too. It means more possession in the final third, more shots at goal, more free kicks to shoot and assist and more opportunities to put corners in. This will likely increase his worth to the side.
I get the idea of selling him, I'd have never have bought him for 40 million+ but that decision has been made. We now have a proper system in place where a DOF makes decisions as opposed to a coach which should help. However this seems an awful time to sell him, his value will be at the lowest point and we'd lose lots of money on him, on a player who looks to have settled after a tricky 6 months and may be able to kick on next season.
I think he will be one of the first on the team sheet. He's an attacking threat, can score goals from distance and create opportunities from open play and dead balls, but also play in a rigid team structure that can be based on pressing the opposition. He is similar to Cleverly, but a major upgrade on how he was used for Watford. I think he will do well next season.
