Gerrard's most prolific season regarding assists (Never reached 10+ assists before) compared to Sigurdsson playing as a LWB at Swansea

Also to the people screaming ''HOW MANY WERE IN OPEN PLAY'' Keep in mind Gerrard's most amount of assists in a season prior to 2013/14 was 9.

In 2014/15 Gylfi Sigurdsson created 9 open play assists, 10 in total.

I'm also fairly sure he would have a lot more assists than just 13 if he played alongside Suarez, Coutinho & Prime Sturridge.

1177 fewer passes, 10 more chances, 4 more goals with his left foot.

How much would prime Gerrard cost today? Because it wasn't until he was past it when he started creating goals. Solely a goal scorer during his prime.

I'll never take anybody seriously who says we overpaid for Sigurdsson, we massively underpaid seeing as he was worth £150+ million for Swansea.

I for one welcome the return of @RickyRiders lol

Makes sense.

How would you feel about him as an 8 and the special player ahead of him?

I'm not sure Zat. I'm pretty torn on the whole midfield at the moment.

I really do think we need a big, physical presence to come in, and primarily that player to be the '8' in Silva's 4-3-3. However, I also think we need someone who can put their foot on the ball from deep and knock it about.

It looks like Schneiderlin is going to be given the chance to play that role which is fine, but if he's not up to scratch / can't be bothered, then we're in the same position as we were this year. It's why I was an advocate of Carvalho. He's a player which can cover both the deep-lying playmaker and big physical presence that we need.

If Schneiderlin can indeed cut it, then I think the priority can be shifted to a playmaker in the Ziyech/Ozyakup mode who can get on the ball and carry it forward or pick a pass. While he wouldn't be my first option, Wilshere could even be an option for this role.

So in that system, I think they could be the '8' and Gylfi the '10', but both kind of interchanging and having the freedom to roam.

Gueye also has to be factored in. I think he's a better option than Schneiderlin for the 'screener' in front of the defence as in that role he is excellent, but he lacks the passing range or skill on the ball to then take us forward, so again we'd need a player to drop deep and pick the ball up from the defence.

I don't think Gylfi would be best used there, and we don't have that type of player (if Rooney goes definitely), so we'd need to bring someone in. Issue then is if that's somebody like a Ziyech or Ozyakup, we're left with having no height or power in a position where it's very easily to get overrun in the Premier League.

My ideal signing would be Doucoure.

While he isn't brilliant on the ball, he's better than Gana and would be a really good folly for whoever plays the screening role. He's able to drive forward at pace and that's when we could get Gylfi on the ball in higher positions, and it would also add that power/physicality we lack in the middle.

Zakaria could be another option that I think would be getable, but he is more like a Carvalho in terms of style than a traditional box-to-box player like Doucoure when I've seen him play.

it worries me that Silva is likely to depend on schniderlin, a player that basically played 3/4's of last season at 50%. he also has a reputation of just picking his money up (united and us) and not showing the fight for the club mentality that we need.

obv he will promise Silva that he will give his all , in order to maintain his place at the club and huge wages.

I really think we need to sign a player in his place.

nzonzi for me fits the bill... if we can get him is another matter

Gylfi has never been a player that makes teams tick.

This is what has baffled me all along about people having a go at him for not doing that.

I said it last year. Don't expect a player who comes in and runs a game. It isn't him. It never has been and never will be.

He's a hard worker who can play a few different roles but also has a real touch of quality. He operates on the edge of the final third and that's where he's at his best - finishing moves by either shooting or providing the assist. Throw into that his set-piece quality, although we hardly ever actually won a free-kick that was in that zone on the edge of the area where he'd be able to have a go at goal.

But he isn't a player who will get on the ball from deep and spread 50 yard passes or keep the play ticking over. He's the player that is ahead of the player that does that.

Which is why Rooney suddenly looked so sluggish after Gylfi's injury. Rooney was picking up the ball on our 30 yard line, to use a Rugby reference, and then had nobody in front of him making the movement that Gylfi did.

When they were playing together, we at least saw Rooney be able to get it into Gylfi and then move into space, and the link up was good. In the game against Leicester, for example, that was really prevalent, with Walcott then able to get involved as both Rooney and Gylfi moved upfield.

I know he doesn’t stamp his authority on the game, it’s why I didn’t rate him at Swansea. He can go missing completely, get an assist for a consolation goal and people will then use that to justify him.

Hes a massively overrated player, what you’ve described is someone who needs the team setup to maximise his ability rather than him positively contributing to an organised team.

Maybe Marco will do the above and we’ll actually get to see a half decent player who isn’t praised for “running a lot”

Well he's going to give him a go and if he can't cut it in pre-season will probably look to move him on.

Schneiderlin looked superb when he first came. Last season he was awful.

We'll see. I don't think either Silva or Brands will be fooled mate.

But he's proved for Iceland the exact opposite Chris lad, literally three days ago.

He's a good player. But he shouldn't be used as the creative fulcrum from deep.

Get the ball into him in and around the area - whether central or wide - and he'll create chances.

We didn't do that nearly enough last year, and that was at times down to Gylfi as well (especially the first 10 games where he wasn't match fit).

We also never had runners in behind. Everything was in front of the opposition defence until Walcott came in.
