I don't know the actual Irish tradition in Ireland, but over here in the USA here I consider it to be one of America's worst pseudo-holidays, on par with Cinco de Mayo.
It’s a day we celebrate St Patrick bringing Christianity to Ireland.

Used to be a Catholic celebration day alone as Northern Prods were deeply suspicious as to why Dublin was flaunting green.

I think the penny has dropped that it really is a National party.

Meh, protestants can be Irish too. Even Unionist ones - whether they like it or not.
As @Bluerover eloquently demonstrated, a lot of the greatest Republican leaders were Protestant.

Wolfe Tone of 1798 led the way in the need to unify Catholic/Protestant/Dissenter against an occupying force who divide and conquer to subjugate a nation.

To leave that aside, had a pint with a couple of Portuguese lads wearing ‘Irish for a day’ t- shirts in my local. Delighted the fuss made of them, the craic from them and the bonds made.

Indeed. I've never understood this weird nationalist propaganda about Protestants when loads of the greatest Irish nationalists, such as Charles Stuart Parnell, Robert Emmet, and Erskine Childers were Protestant.

One of the best qualities of "Irishness" celebrated on St. Patrick's Day worldwide is inclusiveness. That's why so many non-Irish can enjoy it, I think. As a cynical Irishman, I enjoy it on that level. Even if one has practical reservations about Irish unification, there is no doubt that we are better getting along with each other - whether we represent the green or orange segments on the flag. The rugby team shows that. Mind you, I fancy an England win tomorrow. A touch of complacency has crept in, I feel...

There isn’t propaganda about Protestants though bar idiots on social media. SF and SDLP have for decades recognised the need for for people to come together. The Unionist Parties have been a disgrace in perpetuating the enemy at the gate in denial of population change.

Can’t see an English win myself. Although I would take it for 3 points for Everton.
