Has Phil Jagielka peaked?

I have never understood how people class International football as a step up. The class of sides are not a patch on the top level club teams. I would expect Everton to wipe the floor with the current England side.

The main problem lies with a lack of understanding of team setup and more desire to suceed at club level than country.
Listening to Ray (sideways pass) Wilkins banging on about Cole and Terry is nausiating. Jags and Baines are far better options, but he is going on about Champions League experience and winners medals being key??? Of course the Costa Rican, Mexican, USA and even Iranian teams are littered with these players aren't they?!?!.

Jags has performed ok at the World Cup. He was the best player for England against Italy in the first game.

When all is said or done who really cares what 'England fans' think. I only really care about what he does when he plays for Everton.

Mention the name Phil Jagielka to any Evertonian and most will say he's the best CB at the club. After watching last season coupled with this world cup I cant help but admit that hes not up to it at elite level. I'm talking international and champions league material. When playing at that level you get exposed, now I'm not saying he's shi@e, but if we're to progress as a club we need a better CB. Bruno martins-indi would be ideal paired with Stonesy for the future.

Chris Waddle slammed England for not learning. Its not about all your flair and attacking players, youve got to build from the back then up to midfield before you think about attack. All successful sides have a good foundation.

In relation to the the thread title, has he peaked? Yes I think he has a couple of seasons ago.

Yes of course he has, it wasn't that long ago Moyes was getting stick for not getting 11M for him while he had the ( so called ) chance

Well said that man

Baines was good in the World Cup. He's an attacking fullback and was one of England's most creative players.

Even Cole in his pomp couldn't cover two players by himself.

Jags played well too, he wasn't at fault for any of the goals. Suarez' header was just good movement and a great pass.

I was worried about Jags' form but he did ok.

My biggest problem with Cahill and Jags. Both are rubbish bringing it out and have no pace. That really limits how a team plays. England need Stones to step up this season.

As a matter of interest he is 2nd in the Castrol World Cup Index of best defenders and is in their current best eleven team. The only England player in there as well.
I saw this fact quoted on Twitter again today. This is factual evidence never mind opinions. Just wait until he is fully fit again.

I'm afraid I would have Stones instead of Jags as well.

We need a new CB who will take game time and eventually replace Jags and Distin next season.

totally agree. Like the bloke, served us well but I think it's time to move on / over.

IMO he's also an ineffectual skipper.

No, no he hasnt. Jagielka is far and away the best defender at the Club. He's clearly not fully fit. Playing on four games in the last what, 4 months? Thats going to affect his performances.
Distin is the better of the two. He's faster, stronger and better in the air. He's played more than 180 games for us in five seasons. He's made 444 career appearances in the Prem - more than any other foreign player. There's a reason he's still playing 30+ games a season in the Prem despite being 36.

None of this makes Jags a bad player. Jags is a very, very good player, one of the best English CBs in the game at this point in time. But he has peaked - he isn't going to get any better, and I'll be surprised if he's still playing in the prem at 36.

People need to actually READ the op. The question was simply "Has Jagielka peaked?". The answer is yes, but there is no reason to get rid of him yet because we have a 60-game season coming up and Stones probably isn't ready to play all 60 games! IF a big bid came in for Jags in January then MAYBE it would be worth considering, but it's hypothetical because no such bid is likely to come about. However, if we could pick up another young defender like De Vrij or Martins-Indi for a reasonable price some serious thought would have to be given to that idea - neither Jags nor Distin are likely to be able to play 30 games in the prem in two years' time. Stones will be, but who will he play alongside?

Jagielka is still a very capable centre back but of course he peaked. He was in the form of his life in the season we got to the Cup Final which was 08/09 I think. He would have been about 26 back then and he was immense until he got the injury in the Man City game which ruled him out of the Cup Final. I remember Torres being one of the best strikers in Europe at the time and Jagielka mostly kept him quiet in the games we played against them.

I reckon he will still be decent for us for another 2-4 years yet, at least as a squad player if Distin is replaced and Stones takes Jagielka's place.

One thing for sure is that he has been a great servant to the club.

In a word No.

Jags, Cahill and Baines were ruthlessly exposed by half arsed/ineffectual players further up the field, all besides it was clear as rain Baines & Jags were also a bit short on match fitness.

I expect both to firing on all cylinders and back to their best come the new season.

Jags is Boss for Everton and that is all that matters. He will be our Captain for at least another two years.

Nope, he hasn't peaked yet!
Don't believe any of the tosh that the media are spewing...
Didn't we have like the 3rd best defense record last season?

Jags + Milkman = Super boss! Plus Stones in the wings for when Milkman retires...

I haven't read the whole thread, just jumped in now, but I got slaughtered on here for posting before the world cup we should be looking to move him on if we could get an ott fee.

He's a cracking player and a great example to around the place however there comes a time when we've got to do what's right for the club.

If we could of got 10 mill + which we won't now, I'd have sold. Sadly, due to the unfair bad press he received, this probably won't be forthcoming although I still thin a richer club like Arsenal could of got themselves a reliable centre half for the next 3 years. we just can't let an asset dwindle down in value like that though.

This isn't a knee jerking post, I actually said it before the world cup kicked off.

Never thought he was great tbh. Good guy and good voice in the dressing room but not a top quality centre back. People love him for his last ditch save the day tackles but tbh the only reason he has to make them is because his positioning is poor in the first place. Whenever jags goes out injured we do perfectly fine without him. If distin goes out injured tho (as he was in the anfield derby) we're a mess at the back. I know that's only one example but there's plenty more I just can't think of right now. Even the year or so that jags was out injured and distin and heitinga were our centre backs, we were rock solid and heitinga got player of the season ffs. Paired with jags tho and heitinga was all over the place. Distin is prone to the odd goof but tbh he's our best centre back without anyone realising it. Certainly can't say the same about jags who I like as a guy but don't rate highly as a centre back

I actually thought that about Baines last Christmas and then Oviedo got injured so thank god that didn't happen.

Baines and Jags are here till they retire. Both have now past the point where it would be worth it for Everton to sell them. That age is 28 or just 29.

Their value in the dressing room, playing and having around the club is worth more than a few mil. If an OTT offer came from a CL team who needed cover right away in then obviously that might be different but it's not something to plan for and as a club selling them unless they wanted to go wouldn't be the right thing to do.

I'm also more worried when the time comes for Distin to retire.
