Heard a rumour about the Manager interview process and rationale behind appointing Benitez

I was told that out of all of the managers that were interviewed for the manager's job, only Rafael agreed to retain Ferguson in the coaching setup?

So I don't know if this is a complete fabrication, or if it is true, I have only heard it 2nd hand so wanted to ask if anyone else knew about this?

I guess my question is that after serving under several different managers if the above is to be believed do you think the board are seriously considering making Duncan the next Everton Manager?

Personally, I think this would be a masterstroke, mirroring a formula that has worked incredibly successfully at clubs likes Liverpool and Barcelona. Creating an Everton Managerial DNA, Ferguson, Baines, Coleman - each with Everton in their blood and who understand what it means to the fans and our community to play for the shirt and allow us the chance to use Brands and his future successor to develop, identify and engage talent without it costing the earth.

What's wrong with creating the Everton way as a philosophy for success?

If you are looking to commit Hari Kari on this site, then suggest former players in charge.

Jobs for the boys, blah, blah, blah .....

The club currently has no DNA, it is a hotchpotch of various managers who have systematically wrecked the squad, by accident or design, since Moyes. A long term appointment is needed, with a manger who has a clear plan, and we have to buy into that as fans, board and throughout the club.

IF Benitez is the start of that, then all to the good. As to your rumours, frankly it is done now, so who cares?

It's mostly people putting 2+2 together but he seems to survive no matter who the manager is so it's most likely true that you're forced to keep him.

I posted this before Benitez appointment and still believe it to be true.

For what it's worth here is a thought on this. (or is it a conspiracy theory)
I think the board genuinely want to build a dynasty. I believe that rightly or wrongly they have devised a plan.
They have already pencilled in Duncan Ferguson as a future Everton manager.
I'm sure that Carlo Ancelotti accepted that part of his 'job description' would be that he acts as a mentor for Duncan and would 'train him up' to be the next manager.
Carlo leaving early put a spanner in the works, as the board feel it is not yet Duncan's time.
Whoever gets the job this time will have to agree the plan. Nuno obviously didn't, as he wanted to bring in his own staff. Benitez has agreed to continue Carlo's mentorship of Duncan.
Now this may be total bollix. . . . . . . . . . . or it may not.
Top tip - get your money on Duncan Ferguson becoming our next but one manager ;)

The Everton Way? Have you been watching for the last 20 odd years

I like Big Dunc and his role, but find it hard to believe that after “ searching far and wide” we have turned down better managers that we wanted because they wouldnt give him a role . For Rafael it was an easy decision, you’re coming to manage a club were there’s a great deal of suspicion about you , why would you not keep him on if only for the PR value and to avoid creating more tension. We may not be the most sought after club to manage , but I do seriously doubt that anyone would turn down a lucrative pay packet etc because of Ferguson .

Mate 100% agree with you, what I don't understand is the lack of communication about what's wrong with owning that plan - in the main any supporter who truly loves the club would want a Dynasty built on players who have worn the shirt and loves the club. I hate Liverpool with every fibre of my being but they got it right and had success after success - what's wrong with wanting that for us.

How much grooming does one man need to take on the role?

Personally I think it's not a good approach. If he's not ready for Everton and there are doubts about his capabilities, he should go and actually manage elsewhere. Earn his spurs, make mistakes, see if he has what it takes.

Fair points, but it's not like it's a key role, the nature of football today means as a manager like it or not you are a brand and your future success depends on your success and to get that success you need to delegate and to have a team that you 100% trust in carrying out your plans and strategy.

You are falling into the trap that a lot of supporters do and think it's about money....it's not - true Prem clubs pay very well but regardless if you are paid a million a year or a week if you can't retain your job it's a mute point, so if you are putting yourself at risk you are not going to do it with one of your hands tied behind your back...
