Heard a rumour about the Manager interview process and rationale behind appointing Benitez

We hired Benitez because we had no idea what we wanted, were completely unprepared (which is a failing in any business not to have a succession plan in case something unexpected happens), he was available and, frankly, because we're up the creek financially and know he'd probably keep us up as a minimum.

That's it. Anything else is complete b******.

It's consolidating time until the stadium comes, and to make sure we're in/around the top half of the league for it.

The club didn't expect to lose Ancelotti, he had a four year contract and it wasn't unreasonable to expect he would last for another season at least.

Do you think Liverpool know who they want to replace Klopp, or City know who they want to replace Pep ?
I doubt if they do, I think football is an industry where certain aspects cannot be planned too far into the future.

I am very interested in hearing @davek 's take on this: the 'big galoot', whilst not necessarily being at the forefront of Dave's attentions, certainly occupies some small component therein.

It's called planning. Of course we didn't expect to lose Ancelotti. But, he'd taken us to 12th and 10th and some of the footy was awful.

Are you telling me a Premier League football club shouldn't, in that situation with the money spent, have had a reasonable plan in place?

Even just a plan of what 'type' of manager we would go for should the unexpected happen.

We didn't have a clue. Some were like Potter, one was Moyes, the other Rafael, then Nuno etc. All varying styles of play, no set idea of what we wanted. It was like a tombola.

I think the following from wiki blows your comment out of the water mate sorry...

When Shankly retired in 1974,
  1. Paisley proceeded to win six league titles and three European Cups to become the most successful manager in the history of the club.
  2. Joe Fagen took over, and continued the Boot Room tradition, and winning a treble of League, European Cup and League Cup in his first season. He again guided Liverpool to a European Cup Final.
  3. Dalglish led the club to a League and FA Cup double
Very very suspicious.

But then by your definition they cannot win. If they have a one man target (or maybe two) and get their man, every Tom Richard* or Harry would be complaining the net was not cast wide enough. If they cast their net wide, then they have no plan. Its called lose/lose.

Have you even considered that they always wanted Benitez? Knowing the furor it would cause, they played the field so that he appears the least worst of a divisive bunch? No? Me either, but it is another unknown for speculation, which after all, is all anyone is doing.

*Apparently the shortened form is bad language on here, FFS

What exactly is Fergusons formal role anyway (apart from the obvious "He lays out the cones")

Ancelotti's son was assistant manager, so is Ferguson a coach, 2nd assistant manager etc?
