Heitinga

It's not about him being as good as finished, more that one more injury and his career could be over. Once his legs have gone he loses a lot of his game. We can't afford for that to happen mid way through a season and then not have adequate cover. We need to be looking for a replacement for him soon if we want to have the depth to compete in Europe.
If we sell Heitinga we will have:

Duffy
Distin
Jagielka

as our centre backs. If we get into Europe we'd be looking at 45+ games in a season, that is not good enough. Moyes bought Heitinga and Distin for £5m apiece, but that was two years ago. Prices are always going up, and by the time we've sold Heitinga for lets say £5m we'd only see a portion of that re-invested because of agent fees and signing on fees for any prospective new centre half.

You said it's not that uncommon for CBs to play into their late 30s, i'd have to disagree. Could you name ten PL centre halves in the last five years or so who have played past the age of 35/36 and not looked gash ?

I just don't see how Moyes is going to get a player who is as good as Heitinga is right now for the same price, and we certainly can't afford to be selling one of our three proven centre backs for £5m on a punt that Moyes will get a replacement with the potential to be as good. Potential isn't useful if we're playing 2 games a week for most of the season.

You have to start questioning the sanity of selling Heitinga who is 28 and proved in the latter half of last season that he can be fantastic for us and replacing him with a player who has potential but could be gash. It doesn't make sense to me, and that's without even adding to the squad ! (One in one out)

It's a different story when you have a player like Rodwell who you can sell and then bring three players in because Rodwell wasn't making much of a contribution to our team anyway. Heitinga definitely is and will over the coming years.

Also, i think some haven't realised how important it could be to have a continental style centre half like Heitinga if we were to get into Europe and be facing teams like Udiense and Fiorentina. I'd have him over Hoofmaster general for sure.

People have been saying that about Giggs for years. Good players can adapt thier game. Distin is a good player. His replacement is already in our squad, Duffy. Distin's biggest asset isn't his pace, it's his size and aerial ability. It's not that often he has to put the burners on these days as we mostly dominate possession.

Also despite a good start we aren't in europe and it's far from certain we will be.

Also prices seem to be fairly stagnant for the majority of the league. Moyes still looks like he can pick bargains up when they're needed.

Who pays agent's fee's and the like appears to be based on individual circumstances. If a player was desperate to leave or his club desperate to sell we may avoid paying anything hefty. I can't imagine the fee's to be mega high on a £4m transfer?

I worded that wrongly to be honest, that said, a lot of players who have looked after themselves have played on into mid/late thirties. Also Distin's from a very different culture to a lot of our players and has avoided serious injuries. A few who have played on to that age. The first ten are all defenders.

Irwin, Gough, Pearce, Winterburn, Cooper, Alexander, Hierro, Le saux, Dixon, campbell, Tugay, Giggs, Sheringham, Scholes, Phillips, Zola, Speed, Bowyer, Bergkamp, Drogba, Viera, Murphy, Cole, Yorke, Barmby.

I'm sure there's plenty more if I really tried.

I don't really think Moyles does punts, especially not at CB. Only Per Kroldrup didn't really look up to much. The type of money we're talking about bought Yobo, Lescott and Jagielka. All at thier best I'd say only Yobo is a worse player than Heitinga.

For me you have to question the sanity of allowing a player who has talked repeatedly about other clubs to get into the final 12 months of a deal with nothing concrete lined up, especially when you are widely recognized as the paupers of your division and consistently skint through the richest period in the history of the game.

I'd have him over all our CB's at this point. But I'd fume if we lost him for nothing because he strung us along for the last 12 months of his deal. We can't allow players to leave for free and we shouldn't really allow players to lose all value either because if we do we can't afford to replace them.

You may not like selling proven players and buying potential but it's been our MO for the whole of Moyes reign and will continue to be until the day Bill gets carried out of his office.

Distin is still as fit as ever. He's a superb athlete and as Ste says, whilst his pace is a major asset, his general frame and brute strength are big factors too.

I don't think you should start easing a player out of the team because they're old on paper. Once their age shows in their performances, then yes you need to start the transition, but it makes no sense to me not to use Distin to his fullest whilst he's still in peak form and fitness.

Squad lads and compitition is good.

New contract or no, i think if we were offered 8 mill for him by a CL club, both the player and club would bite their hand of.

who in their right mind would offer 8 million for johny at the moment way hes playing! at the moment cbs have to be jags n distin!

Sami Hyypiä.

No, I'm not a kopite but Finnish.

Hate the shout that Jags can't play the ball from the back and that Heitinga's like Xavi at the back, watched Johnny for years all he ever seems to do is hoof it up

He loves the cross field 50 yarder like, rarely comes off, wouldn't call it a hoof though as it's usually in the general direction of our players.

Jags looked terrified of the ball today. He can play it short and simple though. If I'm honest I reckon him wellying it up the pitch suited Moyes at the time, I don't remember him ever giving him the sheppards hook for it.
