Hibbert is not an effective overlapping fullback. He's not attack-minded enough. I understand the need for fullbacks to support the attack, but why keep giving Hibbert the ball when it's clear he doesn't know what the heck to do with it? When a player is limited in that aspect, you can't expect him to do so much creatively.
Hibbert does his job solidly, but people fail to see the amount of defensive work he puts in. Only his hoofs and lame attempts at suporting the attack gets noticed and criticized.
He is good at what he does, and there's NO reason why he should be replaced anytime soon. Every club has defensive fullbacks. Like Chelsea with Ferreria, Villa with Bouma, Portsmouth with Hreidarsson.
All clubs need these kind of solid reliable players. When you build a team, you have to start out with a solid no-frills defence, with committed and steely characters, who will 'get the job done'. Maybe in a few more years, when we are challenging for top honours, then we will need more creativity from the fullbacks. But for now, there's nothing wrong with sticking with Hibbert.
Hibbert may not be the most fanciful of players, but I like him, for sheer effort and passion alone.
And like someone else has mentioned, defensively, he's one of the best in our team.
