Nazis and the Supernatural.

There's a very good book called Lucifer's Court, a sort of travelogue of Otto Rehn (allegedly the inspirational figure for Indiana Jones) who was sent by the nazis to find legendary artefacts that would given them power.

Without wanting to get deeply into politics, etc, I tend to agree - that was a time when patriotism was strong, and was purely about love for one’s country. Add to that the sense that a shared ideology was under threat, and you can see why youngsters were motivated to behave in this way.

Without wanting to get deeper into politics etc, I totally disagree.

100+ years ago poor underclasses of society had limited education and were ripe for cynical exploitation and propaganda. It was an era to be pitied. A huge proportion of soldiers were terrified conscripts not brave warriors fighting for King and Country.

I'd bet patriotism and ideology meant little t them. By and large they became brainwashed cannon fodder.
