Hereford was a walled city during the civil war period of the 1600s holding firm for the monarchy as parliamentary forces gathered beyond the gates. Emboldened by a call to arms the citizens committed to man the ramparts if the alarm bell rang which, within a few days, it did. It was an early morning attack and being partial to the potent local cider most remained asleep as the bell tolled and the Parliamentary forces strode in.
So disgusted by the local populace a captain of the Parliamentary forces wrote to his brother describing them as filthy heathens adding "they curse and spit everywhere and some doth even speak Welsh"
