History

America 1941 - how to spot a Nazi.

An interesting concept, with out dated stereotypes.
Some surprising presumed bedfellows, both nazi and none nazi.
The point being...according to the writer is -

...Believe me, nice people don’t go Nazi. Their race, color, creed, or social condition is not the criterion. It is something in them...
There are some I have know I would bet on...and yet, can you really tell?
There are a few I would literally stake my life on
But in reality you mostly can't tell who would whisper in 'the wrong' somebody's ear about you...and that is the insidious nature of the totalitarian state...it only takes one.

I like her in Eastenders

When thinking about Corona Virus and these unprecedented times, it reminded me of a conversation I had with my late grandmother about 1941.

My grandfather never spoke about it to me (or anyone really), but it was a year that weighed heavy on his heart for the rest of his life. He was in the RN during WWII.

He was on HMS Calcutta (C-Class Light Cruiser) when it was sunk off Alexandria, where 107 of his ship mates perished. However, he lost many other friends.

She recalled the loss of HMS Barham, HMS Hood, HMS Repulse, HMS PoW, HMS York and HMS Galatea, to name a few, where he had friends of his on board.

It made me have a search for the loses in that year and it really struck me that how just one service lost so many men - a huge sacrifice and loss.

Maybe of interest to @john jako and @Toast.

My uncle, who was works manager at Hartley's Jam Factory in Liverpool, joined the Navy in WW1. He was 18. When he had finished his training he was posted to a ship, The ship happened to be at sea. So Uncle was dropped off at a 'supply island' in Scapa Flow. He was told that his ship was due to pick up supplies at the island and he should join it there. He was alone on the island for nearly 2 weeks. He was told that sometimes German ships came to the island to steal supplies and he was given instructions about where to hide. 18 eh, he didn't have to worry about a place at Uni!

The worldwide 'Spanish' flu pandemic (1918-1920) actually originated (case zero) via a farmer in Kansas. (USA)

Press censorship in the UK and USA suppressed the news.

A newspaper published in Madrid, was the first to highlight the magnitude of the crisis.

Hence the term 'Spanish Flu'.

Estimates put the global death toll between 50 and 100 million worldwide, over a 2 year period.
