As my son likes to say about horrible statements that have some truth to them, he's not wrong.

From the standpoint of deterrence, it's a way. It probably won't work since the overlap set between the set of terrorists and the set of sociopaths is pretty large.

That's not the reason we refrain. We refrain because of what doing that does to us. You can make an argument for it per Mill. We generally don't run the world Mill's way because we don't like the implications of believing utilitarianism, in terms of what we would have to do.

That was a lot of effort to defend an idea and a person that is actually, wrong...

I could go on here about why you'd think bringing up the fact your son likes to defend stupid ideas, and then you kinda did the same thing... like where'd he get that from... whatever the whole idea is just so stupid and completely wrong...

You can save the whole attempt at being philosophical and deep "what it does to us"... that doesn't even cross people's minds because that would mean you have really considered doing such a thing. Which, intelligent people like @Tubey don't even get to.

You wildly missed the point.

If you just leap to the conclusion that the idea is wrong on the basis of your priors, you miss things. My father is better at that one than I am, because he hasn't stuffed as many books into his head. I find those sometimes get in the way.

You missed the point about "what it does to us" as well. Doing these sorts of things crosses people's minds. Trump is an existence proof on that, as @LinekersLegs pointed out. It's that if we really consider the idea, normal human beings discard it. Trump either didn't really think about it, isn't a normal human being, or both.

The game theory I did taught me, in no uncertain terms, that what happens down pathways that never actually happen is often really important to the final outcome. I don't know that I can give you the intuition on that one in a reasonable number of English words, though. I know that it's impossible to grok without the math.

At least tag the lad in
@Paris

That guy has developed a weird obsession with me.

In the past week and a bit he’s tagged me in approximately ten posts. None of which I’ve read of course and it’s annoying the poor sod.

Very weird but rather funny lol
