Horse Racing

Never going Gold Cup day again, too many people and most are plebs just going because it a big day and know naff all about racing and just want to get rat arsed and cause problems.

Highlight of the week for me was probably the way Tiger Roll shot clear, backed loads of winners and made a tidy profit over the week but enjoyed it so much more the first 3 days just because you could move without having a pint spilled on you or have to queue for 20 minutes just to use a disgusting toilet.

....spot on. Gave up going many years ago but it’s an experience if you haven’t been before. The November Cheltenham meeting is a great one to go to.

Went to GC when Coneygree won it and wanted to do all 4 days for one time. I was shattered before I went yesterday and then too many people made it a wretched day made worse by seeing what happened to Sir Erec.

I love how the media try to make Cheltenham this big thing, but the public don't give the slightest toss and just want to know when the Grand National is.
Other way round mate. Race fans rank Cheltenham many leagues above the National, while to the media the National is the, er, national treasure
Just my opinion, but I think the four days at Cheltenham is the better of the two, but the Grand National is the best race to watch.

....no doubt Cheltenham is the better quality meeting but Aintree is always a brilliant card. The Aintree Hurdle is often a repeat of the Champion Hurdle.

The growth in popularity of Punchestown Festival, though, means many of the top Irish horses increasingly stay at home.

Also the tightness of the Elliott/Mullins title race means they leave virtually all theirs at home other than national runners.

I don't want to decry the National from a heritage point of view, but its a grade 3 handicap chase for, lets, say, "steady" horses. There's a reason why bookies promote the crap out of the National, because its by far the most difficult race to study form, making it a lottery. Its the most profitable race on the season by far for the bookies, which means its the biggest loss-making race for the punter. Sharp punter who actually care about trying to eke a steady long term profit from their betting steer well clear of the National.

.....the quality of the National has significantly improved in recent years, you can see that from the condensed weights. The prize money is so good, and the fences much safer that it attracts the good horses. It’s difficult finding a winner, but it’s certainly not the lottery it was and is definitely a punting proposition.

I started my portfolio for Aintree in October, backing Rathvinden @ 40-1. It’s a top class horse having won the NH Chase at last years Festival. Mullins has laid it out for this years National and is now about 16-1.

Can you get a drink - No !
Can you get a bite to eat - No !
Can you get to the loo - No !
Can you get a bet on - No !
What time will the brawl start ?

PMSL !

.....never personally had that problem, certainly not at Aintree but I tend to pay more for the better stands and prefer to go midweek.

Done lots of meetings in Ireland and it’s recommended. Treated the wife, kids and their partners to Leopardstown races last Autumn and it was brilliant; meal overlooking the parade ring, table service for drinks and Tote bets, seats in the owners enclosure to nip up and watch the races.

Cheltenham was starting to get a bit mad, but I wouldn’t go near a racecourse if the experience wasn’t good.

Has that one been withdrawn Eggs? What else have you gone for? Any early picks for the rest of the meeting?

...nope, there was a declaration stage a few days ago and Noble Endeavor is still among the entries. I’ve got my National portfolio, just hope 3 or 4 turn up. (Rathvinden 40-1 and 33-1; Ms Parfois 45-1; PairofBrownEyes 40-1; Rock the Kasbah 33-1). Happy with that lot, given Rathvinden is now 12-1 2nd fav and the others generally much shorter.

There’s only a few races with declarations. I love the Foxhunters and some folk on here cleanedup when I gave Dineur a few years ago. It’s gown to run again, it’s 13 now but sentiment made me back it again at 36-1. I’ll be interested if Greensalt, Sir Jack Yeats and Burning Ambition make it.

Gold Present 25-1, Glen Rocco 33-1 and Theatre Territory 20-1 are in the notebook for Friday’s Topham.

The Aintree Bowl on Thursday looks like it might be a high quality race with many of the Gold Cup field present. Kemboy is younger than average winners but i’ll be backing that if it turns up.

I’ll post next week when the entries are more certain.
