In the states they estimate 10000 ex racehorses or potential racehorses are slaughtered every year but the number they say is probably a lot higher . Wherever you go the numbers are high, Australia , Ireland , Uk , Middle East etc. Lack of potential owners and cost makes them an unwanted animal which is a shame as they are so majestic .Most of the horses on the open market are TB. Either ex racehorses or ones that weren’t good enough to be a racehorse.
As you say it’s an expensive business keeping a horse even if it’s just as a pet.
It would be interesting to know how many TB horses bred to race get cast aside and end up in a mincer somewhere in France.
The whole industry of breeding and selling horses needs regulating to stamp out this whole lack of respect to what is a beautiful species of animal.
