What's gone wrong do you think? I mean United have spent a whole lot of money on young English players in the last few years. Jones was £16m or something, Smalling was £12m, Zaha was around £10m, and they've all failed to live up to their price tag. Even people like Powell haven't done anything after arriving with a decent reputation. Throw in the £20+m that was spent on Anderson, the £6m for Bebe and there's been a huge amount spent on young players that haven't really done anything.
Is it the scouting that isn't so good or something else? I know Moyes was saying that the scouting network needed modernising. The only young player I can think of that's come through and looked reasonable in recent years is Januzaj, and it's hard to see how he'll get a game now with all the big money buys.

Jones is extremely talented but hasn't been coached properly in my opinion. If he irons out his rash decision making, he can be one for the future.
Smalling was superb in his first season but he's never kicked on from there. Also, he is extremely poor with the ball at his feet - he doesn't understand possession football and the mechanics of it.
Zaha was a punt, didn't work out.
Anderson - see Smalling. And he's your typical Brazilian in that he thought he was better than he actually is. He has no work ethic either, he's happy to sit on the bench earning his wages - doesn't care about his career.
Powell is a no.10 and can't break into the squad because we have/had too many i.e. Rooney, Kagawa, Mata. He won't play in-front of them. He can also play CM but it's not his preferred position. Also, has an ego for no reason - thinks he has made it already.
Bebe was a YouTube punt - Fergie said he'd never do that again, and didn't.
We also had a squad of players that were brought up on 4-4-2 and looked uncomfortable playing a newer, more technically minded system. That is why Van Gaal is shipping so many out.

Oh and I forgot to add - Evans is gash. Very good with the ball at his feet but that's it. He can't do the fundementals right, i.e. head a ball, spot danger etc.
