To be honest I agree with you. He wouldn't have been lobbed, and even if he was it allows more time for the defence to get back and clear the ball

He did it against Portsmouth when we lost 3-0 early 2008/2009 as well, but that one was well worse. Defoe just tapped it underneath him from a normal one on one.

It happens regularly in football games in general mate. Which is why its important to be alert for 90 mins and switch on after you score, yes i think he could have done better then the starfish and jumping over the ball, i blame him for the first as well. Yes defenders made mistakes, defenders do make mistakes. Hes the keeper mate he is supposed to save goal scoring oppurtunites, if either was a well taken goal or unstoppable i wouldnt open my mouth. But they were both chances a PL keeper should be saving with ease.

That said the ball has changed a lot over the years.

Would we have won tonight, with a good PL keeper? imo - Yes.

So it's ok that defenders can be beaten by one long ball and a touch in the 89th minute, but the goalkeeper can't make a mistake? Everyone on the pitch can make a mistake, but the goalkeeper is held to a higher standard?

I know you hate the guy (and I never use that word) but that's absolute crap, no matter which keeper we're talking about.

He doesn't command his area, is awful with crosses, makes goal costing errrors and spreads panic through the defence because he's a poor communicator. The one bright spot in his game is that he's capable of outstanding reactionary saves, the best in the league in fact.

That said, I see a new cat as a bigger priority than any other position on the pitch.

Considering that our defence gives out relatively few chances and most of them are outside the box Howard's stats look a lot better than he actually is. Ie. stats say he's the 7th best in the prem last season, but a very large proportion of our teams goals conceded have been from Howard's errors. Imagine him with a mediocre PL defence. I think he's good enough to a decent backup keeper for someone.

I agree. He hasn't had to make wonder save after wonder save to keep clean sheets. A lot of the time the quality of the defending infront of him means that he doesn't even have to get his gloves dirty. The general reaction probably is a bit knee jerk given that we've conceded the same amount of goals as United, but maybe it is time to look at someone like Ruddy or Vorm to put up a fight for the goalkeeping jersey?

Howard minimizes those and also makes up for them each game. Look at the Ben Arfa break away where Howard not only deflected the rip on goal but also covered the rebound.


...Not saying Howard is the greatest all time...but he is a top 5 in the EPL.

I agree. He hasn't had to make wonder save after wonder save to keep clean sheets. A lot of the time the quality of the defending infront of him means that he doesn't even have to get his gloves dirty. The general reaction probably is a bit knee jerk given that we've conceded the same amount of goals as United, but maybe it is time to look at someone like Ruddy or Vorm to put up a fight for the goalkeeping jersey?

You really think Ruddy will come back? This whole playing first team football and getting called up by my country is boring, lads. Where's that nice bench I used to sit on.

He had three shots at him all game. Saving one of them is not a good day's work.

Makes great acrobatic saves. Doesn't control his box, prone to errors.

They're the same guy, only Vorm is smaller.

No problem bringing in a challenger, but Vorm isn't the guy.
