Maybe he's one of those keepers who's happy to sit on the bench like Mucha, Turnbull, Hilario, Cudicini, Westwood etc? I wouldn't have confidence in Guzan as any more than a back up.

I'm not sure what you're basing this on, as I assume you haven't seen him play much.
He's playing over Given now, Given is healthy and sitting on the bench. Guzan is a very good keeper, the only thing Howard has over him right now is experience.
He didn't turn pro until he was 22.

Given has been having a 'mare since the Euros. Lambert decided that he needed to come out of the firing line after the shocking game he had against us. The only options available to him are Guzan and Marshall and the American is the more senior. He's taken his chance well but if he was all that why has it taken since 2008 for anyone to notice?

I'll just move on here from Guzan. He's had a loan spell at Hull as well where he did very well and they wanted him back.
Given has been average to poor for years. He's been replaced at his last two clubs by younger keepers, and Newcastle are better off without him as well.

Having rewatched in normal time and without volume. Howard 'looks' like he should have done better with both goals.
However, Jags wasn't much better with his positioning on both either.
None of which should have mattered as only 50% of our goals counted and they would have waved the white flag.

I've never rated him tbh, i honestly can't think of a single match where i've thought, 'thank god for howard'.
He's not the worst of all time but if some Premier League overlord forced him to be swapped with any other first team goalie in the premier league then we wouldn't be worse off.

I think think of many many games where I felt we shouldn't have won/gotten a result, but for incredible saves from Howard. He's one of the best shot-stoppers in the league, last night was incredibly uncharacteristic. He is **** at dealing with shots from range though
Name one of those in the last eighteen months. He's not the player he was, is the point. These 'uncharacteristic' games are happening more and more often.

Just watched the highlights and the way Howard reacted for both goals reminded me of a reasonably decent athletic footballer who got told he had to go in goal but has no experience at the role so didn't actually know the best way to try and stop those goals.
Was poor for both goals, of course he wasn't the only one but to let 2 goals in like that in 1 game is worrying.
He's been a decent keeper for us over the years, about the right level of keeper for our position.
