Benitez has spent nothing and improved our team dramatically. His signings have been inspired. I wasn’t a fan of the guy but I’m warming to him. I like the rapport he’s building with the fans. He made a point of coming over to us away fans at the end. He gets us Scousers.

Credit to the Huddersfield fans - they were magnificent and like a 12th man.

The worry is the depth of the squad at this present time.

Keane was atrocious. A Prem side puts 4 or 5 past us today. He was completely lost in the middle of the back three. His positioning was terrible and it helped lead to our midfield looking shambolic. Holgate still can’t track a runner. Thought Branthwaite was solid. There’s a player in there. I hope he’s not moved on.

Kennyis what he is. Not comfortable going forward. Good defender. Hasn’t improved in three years. Nkonkou is fun. Are we sure he’s a defender?

Kean looked really dangerous playing off the back shoulder of their defenders the first 25-30 minutes? After that, Huddersfield took control of the midfield and the chances disappeared. Stupid red. Don’t love the ball but play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Feel like he would thrive playing minutes with Digne.

Iwobi loves Cup games against lower division sides. Happy for Gbamin. Showed flashes in possession. Needs game time somewhere. Davies plays to his competition. And having Keane behind him did him no favors.
I agree with most of this good post I gave motm to Gray but Townsend deserves a mention he played really well and pulled a few fouls late on to slow the game down.
The linesman made a couple of key decisions in our favour as well. Bennie is an ideal manager for moise ( if he stays) he will improve
him and we could end up with a star.
A gutsy win in the end but typical Everton edge of the seat drama.

Considering we made 9 changes, all of which i thought were justified. 2 of those 9 have played very little football due to Covid and the 2 players that remained in the starting 11 in Keane and Holgate have been arguably our poorest players this season, the performance wasn't a surprise. There we're positives though, we're starting to show some character when up against it. It's a shame it take going a man down to do that but some of the players are beginning to show a little fight. JPG got through a whole 90 minutes. He wasn't great, got caught out in possession a few times but given the guy hasn't played a competitive game in nearly 2 years i think you can forgive the ring rust. Iwobi continues to improve, he'll never be the player he should have been for the price tag but if Bentiez can turn him into consistent squad player that'll be some achievement.
Townsend scored - both him and Grey getting on the score sheets early is a good sign.
Begovic again is a solid reliable No2 and i'll give the manager credit, he got the subs right and that won us the game.
The bad?
Keane needs a break from the team now. The guy's become a total liability and i don't think he has the character to play himself out of this funk. The sooner Godfrey is back the better
Holgate and Keane as a partnership don't work
Holgate isn't good enough. When he was linked with a move away a few weeks ago some were up in arms about it. The kid had a good a few good games for Dunc and Carlo, other than that he's looked weak, sloppy and arrogant. He's 100% on the 'sell if a bid comes in' list.
JonJoe Kenny will never be good enough - we already knew this but still, it can't be stressed enough.
Kean isn't going to make it at Everton. He could not get off the pitch quick enough last night and whether it's a soft red or not (it was) it's mental to react like that right in front of the ref. He started brightly but the moment that goal was disallowed his head dropped and he gave up. Yes if that goal hadn't been wrongly chalked off by the linesman maybe he'd have gone on to have a blinder but there was still so much of the game to go. The kid gets defended a lot with many fans claiming his failure at Everton is not his fault but the clubs, Fergusons. Carlo's... etc but the the bottom line is the kid has had his chances, has never taken them and probably never will. Hopefully for his sake as well as ours PSG come back in for him should they sell Mpabbe. That's where he wants to be and that's where he needs to be for his career. He won't make it in the Premierleague - not unless his work ethic massively changes.

Erm what... the ground was only 40% full lol

Made hard work of it but at least we went through eh?

Piping down the Huddersfield fans and their incessant drum was nice at least

I was right next to them too and they were unbearable when they equalised

Seriously though, sod off with the drums. Palace and Stockport County have one too and it just feels like it's a fan base admitting they can't create any atmosphere without an artificial element

Say what you want about Goodison, but when it rocks it at least rocks in an authentic manner

The worst was the Riverside, Middlesbrough score, you’re freezing and their fans go “wooo hooo” in time with Song 2 by Blur blasting out of the speakers.

this was a tough one to pick MotM so many of our players were playing their first game of the season and everyone at times looked unfamiliar with their teammates. Ring rusty would be the word I guess. Davies had a good first half given his surroundings and Gomes did well to get more shape in the team, Nkounkou should have scored but didn't , but did get in good positions. Branthwaite did ok in the circumstances. Surprised He and Davies got hooked - thought Gbamin would only play 60 and Doucoure would come on. If we had lost on pens this would be a very different story. If there goal stood or ours... some odd officiating all in all. Bit of a mess, bit of a crapshoot but we came out ok in the end. I don't think anyone showed anything that catapults them into contention for Brighton, but Keane, Holgate, Kean and Gbamin showed enough to hope they wont be playing at the weekend on the coast. Went for Gomes in the end as he was the best midfielder in the second half and never gave up which is a big improvement for him.
