I agree with Southall for 3/4 years he was unbeatable at times, though talking to other football fans a lot seem to think he was on par or slightly below Clemence and Shilton,I think Kanchelskis was the last truely stand out signing we made and had a season close to being in a world class bracket

..I agree that the likes of Kanchelskis, Lineker and Rooney are considerations but there limited time with us are the difference for me. I always thought Clemence was better than Shilton but I don’t believe either we’re better than Southall. It’s all about opinion of course but very interesting discussions to have.

..Southall. I use the definition that they would’ve got a game for any team on the globe. I heard another definition of world class that I also like, ‘if there’s an inter-galactico competition would these players get in a squad representing Earth’? I reckon Ball, Wilson and Southall would have.

It's a really hard one that and in many ways we haven't had that many post war "world class" players but some great teams. I think Ball and Southall would be the only unquestionable ones, but Lineker for that season must have been close.

I think Wayne Rooney was a world class teenager, in fact he remains the best 16 year old I've ever seen. There's some debate on Kanchelskis who was unplayable but he was let go by Manchester United and certainly post 1997 never really recaptured those heights.

Pre War, Lawton, Dean, Jones, Mercer, Collins, Southworth, Geary could all have been called world class.

Its a bit more difficult with the older players because at that time you couldnt or didnt have anything to compare them with, look at when England classed themselves as the best then Hungary rolled into town and spanked them, niwdays theres football 24/7 from virtually every country so fairer comparisons can be made

..(if Collins is Bobby Collins I don’t think it’s pre-war. Apologies if it’s another.)
